epox 8rda+ vs. asus a7n8x: your opinions

i've always been a supporter of epox in the past, and it seems that the current board is an excellent competitor to the asus (in terms of benchmarks, anyways). however, i generally see the asus at the top of most lists in terms of best nforce2 board. why does everyone consider the asus board a better choice?

It's just the "best" I think because of all its on-board options. Most people really don't need SATA (-RAID) or even firewire for that matter. The only reason I have one is because I got it refurb, otherwise I would have purchased a 8RDA+ because it has everything a gamer/tweaker needs, without paying $30+ for all the extras.

(ego meter, hmph. what's the point of knowing it all if you can't rub it in?)

8rda+, only reason to get the Asus IMO is the serial ATA. I dont like using third party controller chips myself, plus there arent a bunch of Serial ATA drives around.

edit: One thing though, if you plan on using the spdif interface to the soudstorm audio you have to purchase it seperately, so this may even out the price a little more. I think epox sells them for around 15, but I heard you can go to radioshack and make one for a couple dollars. YMMV

I got the A8N8X deluxe for two things over the non-deluxe, The 3com nic and the soundstorm. I haven't been let down. The original NIC sucked, and so did the sound on the non-deluxe version.

😀

its basically because of the extra features.

the 8rda+ actually has SoundStorm quality sound. it meets all the criteria except for S/PDIF out (which would add about $30 to the price tag in itself, but you can make your own for about $5...) for SoundStorm certification.

the 8rda (non+, with the MCP southbridge [as opposed to MCP-T]) does NOT have Soundstorm, though...

would you use the asus on board sound over an an old sblive card? I'm also looking to upgrade from my TBird 1300. 🙂 Man, it just seems so slow.

i would go with epox because they're cheaper
unless you really need to use all the features that the asus board has, i would go with epox

I also opted for the EPoX...the sound is VERY good and it has onboard NIC that is fast. There is no lack of quality inherent in a "budget" board. If you need the features on the ASUS, get the ASUS, if not, save some $$ to put toward more memory or a better GPU (IE, get the EPoX). My board set up easier than anything I have ever used.

😀

C'mon guys. He's asking about 8RDA+ and A7N8X (vanilla), which is just a few bucks more expensive, not A7N8X Deluxe for US$137

I think 8rdA+ is definitely superior, since it has MCP-T southbridge, versus MCP on A7N8X. Even without SPDIF connector, sound quality should be significantly better, or am I wrong about this?

Couple this with the 94$ price tag @ newegg and you have a winner. Although I'm seriously considering a Soltek board myself...
