I recently purchased an Epox 8RDA+, rev 1.1, AMD XP2700 and 2 sticks Corsair XMS PC 3200 memory (not low-latency). I have been having fits trying to get the video card to work.
At the start, I installed them, using Windows 98SE, and tried it on XP also, with the same exact lack of results.
Here's what happens: When the system boots, it detects the card; a Visiontek GF4 Ti 4600. However, the system stays in 16 color mode and low resolution (600x480, I think it's called). Any attempt to access the video card by changing resolution or color results in immediate lockup. If I install ANY drivers, upon reboot, it locks up hard.
I did some digging around and found that while in VGA mode, the system will do the Direct Draw tests in DxDiag, but when the drivers are installed (but system not rebooted, and sometimes the system will correctly boot after one initial failure), direct draw shows as enabled but I cannot run the tests. Direct3D is disabled in either case...and if I try to run a 3D game, it says that Direct3D isn't available.
Here's what I did to try to figure this out:
I tried various Detonator driver versions, from 28xx series to latest 43x series, with no change.
Swapped in an old GF2 MX card, with no change.
Ran the system on default options, and even underclocked the CPU, no change. 166/333 or 133/266 FSB, no difference.
Removed one memory stick to disable the dual memory controller, no change.
Swapped out both memory sticks with an older PC2100 Corsair Module, no change.
Switched to Windows XP because I thought that the dreaded 512+ MB memory problem was to blame, no change.
At this point, I'm inclined to think that it's the motherboard, but I'm not sure what the deal is. On my old board (Epox 8KHA+), it has an AGP 2.0 slot, and seems to be running at 3.3v, whereas the new board, even with AGP 8x turned off, runs at 1.6v. I don't know if that'd affect the video card since it is an 4x card - haven't been able to find specs on it so far...
So I don't know if it's a fluke, and I should get an exchange, or should I get another maker, like an Abit NF-7S?
