Ok I got all my parts in. 2100+ for pcnut week 49, epox motherboard and wow I am ready to go.
I install everything turn on the computer and it starts to boot and I hear clunk clank and everything
stops dead in its tracks.
Seems that epox put one drop of hot glue on the damn northbridge heatsink....you know the one
right on top of my Gforce 4 card. Yep it fell on the card and smoked it. THATS RIGHT FELL OFF
$300 card shot to hell yep I am mad.

Enought of the tears I put in my old geforce I card and rebooted after shouting running around the house
like a crazy man and wishing the dumb F that designed epox would come to my door with a big smile
and ask me how it was going.

1) how can they get away with attaching something like this with a dab of glue?
2) is there anything that I can do to have epox pay for this?
3) no he never came to my door so I can't shoot him.

by the way I got it to boot with no heatsink on the northbridge and it ran at 166 with no problems
the processor was running with stock voltage and didn't even break into a sweat.
I have a thermaltake slk-800 wonder how fast this processor will go,

I know one thing this is my first and last epox and I advise anyone to get something better from any company
but EPOX.

The northbridge heatsink is held on the same way it it held on by other manufacturers...with two spring pins that go through the board. The pink stuff on the heatsink is not glue, and it is not there to hold the HS on. I'm sorry for what happened to you, but it probably got loose during shippng or installation of the motherboard, but it is not a design flaw by any means. All Nforce 1 and 2 boards have the NB, and as such, the NB HS, in the same spot.

Your best bet would be to RMA the GF4 and tell them it smoked itself. Unfortunately, it was just one of those things that happen and are not really anyone's fault.

:(

no no pins.....
yep there is a pink tin on the sinc and on each side of that is a drop of clear looking glue.
hot stick glue I am guessing

Interesting that you managed to unpack the board, install it, put in all the other parts, close the case, and it didn't fall off until you... jarred it loose by pushing the power button?

Did you maybe use the heatsink as a handle and stress the pins that anchor it to the motherboard...? Tempting, of course, since it sticks out so nicely. I try to handle the board by its edges or else use the AGP slot and/or I/O blocks to maneuver it, seeing as how they are very firmly attached to the PCB. Sorry to hear about your video card, regardless :( Are you sure it's dead?

Did you buy a refurbished board by any chance? I know for a fact all 8RDA and 8RDA+ boards come with the same round HS that is held on by two spring pins. The pink stuff is thermal transfer material, and if you also have clear gunk on it as well, then it sounds like someone had the board before and had a different HS on the NB. They probably returned the board for whatever reason and they decided to glue the HS back on.

If you look here you can plainly see the white pins holding the HS on the board.

Yikes, if it's a refurb tell the company you got it from what went down, and that you want your video card AND motherboard replaced, or cash refund for the board. If it's new call up EPox and start screaming ;).

sounds to me like you got a board that someone tried to fix, either another customer,or the seller broke it,tried a cheap fix to hide the defect, and sent it out.

not sure what recourse you have, its doubtful you will have any luck with your video card.

Little update.
I looked at the package when I opened the box and I am no factory person but
I have looked at enough new motherboards and the bag looked like new. Usually
when you remove a motherboard and replace it you get scratches and folds in the bag
but it was perfect. IF I had knocked off the pins the pins would have been in the case or the bag
they were not put on period.
I replaced the sinc by using the pins from a blue orb I had and they worked ok. Wish I could have used
the orb but the pins on the epox are about 3/16 inch wider. Man epox sucks.

BUT one lucky thing I moved the video card to another system to see what it would do
and it did boot up with a pic. Any ideas why it went black on the epox and even when I removed
the sinc from the top of my graphics card it would not boot but in another system it will ?

So I hope my card continues to run.

By the way this little 2100 I got from pcnut. It was only $105 week 49, the reason I purchased from
him is he guarantees them to be week 48 or 49 and I hit 2700 speeds by just upping the fsb to
166 no other adjustments yet. Have not messed with anything because of all the other problems.

thanks big time for your post and I hope the video card continues to work, but like I said I will never buy
another one of their products, and will try my best to see that none of my friends do either.

Please explain to me again why Epox sucks? Is it because you got screwed with a refurb or repackaged board you are mad? If the pins weren't there, something happened to the board, but yet it's still Epox's fault? Sounds like you have your facts a bit screwy. Epox does not use glue to hold on their NB HS. People like you are annoying. I understand why you are upset, but as several people told you in this thread, it is not Epox's fault. However, you are convinced you know what's going on, and that something that clearly is not Epox's fault, you are blaming on Epox. So now because you got one board that was obviously tampered with, and it caused you problems, you decide to "spread the word" that Epox sucks...interesting. I'm glad most people have a better head on their shoulders than you...

:disgust:

Hmmm if I purchased a Roll Royce or the best brand in the World and I had problems does that mean it sucks?

You`ve just been unlucky, these things happen even to the best products available, sounds like you got a refurb to me.

I can tell you my friends and I use Epox boards and they do not suck, infact stability has been awesome for me.

Aw, c'mon everyone needs a hobby, whether it's world domination or going around unfairly bashing companies. ;)
