If anybody could help me it would be wonderfull.

1. I have Windows98 SE according to the my computer properties. Even when it is changing drivers, it gets files from WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION.

2. I installed the ac97 drivers for which is called VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM).

3. My sound wont work. I even went into settings>control panal>multimedia and it displays nothing for the audio playback devices.

4. I install the windows98 drivers (non 98 SE) for the sound which is called VIA pci Audio Controller.

5. My sound works but then i get a fatal exception everytime i open up my C: drive, or IE, or anything and i can't do anything except reboot.

6. I reinstall the Windows98SE drivers (VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM)) and the FATAL ERRORS are gone but no sound?

my windows build version is....4.10.2222 A it says Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition.
epox 8kta3

maxtor 12gb HD

Please help me, until this problem is solved I HAVE NO SOUND.

Thanks for all the help guys.
Yes, i have my sound enabled in my bios, I will try to install the new sound drivers to see how it works.

Just a quick question, what does that (WDM) mean at the end of that driver name?

Thankyou Knup, but I installed those new sound drivers and still no sound. I was looking around and see that many people have this problem with VIA686 onboard sound.
I will quickly go down the list so that nothing will be missed.

1. I have the sound enabled in my bios.
2. I do have the speakers properly connected to my sound port
3. I do have my speakers ON and the volume UP
4. I do have windows 98 SE
5. When i install windows 98 (non second edition) drivers, there is sound but fatal errors
6. The sound did work previously before i upgraded my drivers, but when i reinstall the old drivers i get the fatal errors.
7. I do have the EPOX 8kta-3 MB with the ac97 onboard sound card
8. There seems to be 2 different types of driver name
1. VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) - this doesnt crash my system but no sound
2. VIA PCI Audio Controller -this makes sound but crashes my system.
9. What the heck does that (WDM) mean?

Thats all i can think of for the problem i have. Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
