i saw another thread about this, but it was kind of inconclusive. i thot i'd start a fresh one to see if i could attract some more help. i just bought all new stuff and built a new comp. specs:

epox 8kha+
amd xp 1600+
alpha pal8045 w/ sunon
256mb pc2400 corsair cas2
maxtor d740x 20g 7200rpm

now, problem is (well, two problems, really) that i can't get any video and the mobo stops at post code "7F". i've tried 2 different floppies, 2 different cables, switched the orientation of each cable, and cleared the cmos and tried all that again. to no avail, btw. what else could it be?

the video card is probably shot. i got it used from a local shop. its a sis 6326 agp 8mb card. i figured 8mb agp card would do me until i get my gf3 ti200. i gave $15 for it and walked out the door, so it doesnt really matter to me. problem is i have NO access to any other video card (agp or pci). this is all i have for now. and i'd really rather try and figure this out before ive saved up the money again and got my gf3. ill almost definitely have to try a friends video card to test that problem, but what about the "7F" thing? thats just boggling me at this point

7F usually means that it can't find the floppy drive. You can continue to the boot sequence by hitting F1 (I think). If you had video you could have read it yourself. Try clearing the CMOS by setting the jumper or I think it can be done by holding down the INSERT key while POSTing.

OOPS, you've already tried all this. I did see somewhere that the floppy cable needs to be connected backwards on one connector. See if that clears up the F7.

well, i dont know what the error was before, but i barrowed a pci video card instead of the agp one i was using and now i got post and was able to read the error messages. one, yeah was the floppy error, but that was "6F" and then it CHANGED to "7F" after a second or two because there was another error. so "6F" is floppy error and this "7F" thing is something like checksum error. but i restarted and that went away (who knows) and after i put in the new video card and made sure i had the floppy connected right, both errors are gone. so everything is running peachy now and ive just gotta install an os.

thnx. and i did clear the cmos at one point and i think thats what helped with the checksum thing. if not, it was probably where i went into bios settings and saved and exited (the error message said i should do that, so i did :) )
