Hello,

I am trying to quiet the PC down while doing some other upgrades. I bought a Zalman Northbridge HS and was planning on replacing the original HSF but I am not sure how to remove it. There are 4 screws on the fan itself but on 2 corners there are pushpins? I know the Zalman HS has different ways to be mounted but I am not sure which one I will have to use? Do you have to remove the MB from the case to release the northbridge stock HSF?

Anyone have this on there epox board? How did you mount it?

Thanks alot. I am still learning :)

Is that a KT266a chipset? If so just take the fan off and it'll be fine. I had to use one of those boards during an Asus RMA, and I just took the dead fan off and the board was rock solid, even overclocked.

Yes, it is the 266A chipset.

I had read a few times to just take the fan off but I do have this nice shiny copper HS sitting on my desk.

Yes you must remove the board. No its not going to make one bit of a difference even with the zalman, just take the fan off and forgo looks for functioning.

Alright, I went ahead and pulled the MB up to see what was underneath. I did not see any plastic tips underneath. The grommets holding the fan on top are plastic. Am I looking for the right thing?

When I pulled the fan off the HS was moving. I would guess that the thermal grease should now be redone? I cant for the life of me figure out how to get the two plastic grommets/pin to let go of the motherboard.

Will the HS be ok the way it is? Does anyone use the zalman HS for the northbridge? If I have to take the hs off, I might as well use the zalman. But since I was expecting to see a hole with the plastic pin underneath the MB, I wonder if the only way to use this HS is to use the adhesive and "glue" it to the chip.

Thanks for the help!

Ehhm I have this board and put that exact heatsink on the northbridge when I first bought it. As I recall those (and most) northbridge pins need to be squeezed together and then pulled out through the top of the motherboard. Grab a pair of needle nose pliers and squeeze the area closest to the underside of the motherboard until you can pull one through.

Please note that it's been probably almost 2 years since I did this and I may be wrong. I also used the pushpins to mount the Zalman heatsink rather than the cool looking syringes of thermal adhesive. :)

Thanks alot. I will have to yank it out tonight. I lifted it up last night to peek but I did not see anything. I probably missed it. Thanks again.
