Hi,

I got the AMD XP 1800 Retail box. I got two questions regarding the XP. First, its says about the 4 rubber pad on the CPU. I don't see any. Second, they talk about peeling off the sticker on the heatsink. I also don't see how I can peel off the sticker. In fact, are there any sticker?

Second question is regarding the mainboard. What is the average CPU temperature that should show on the BIOS? I got about 38-41 degrees.. Is that okay?

The 4 pads on each corner of the CPU. They should be there. I don't know about the sticker you're talking about though.

That temperature is fine.

As LuDaCriS66 described, the four pads are on the organic packaging that the CPU die is mounted to. Here's a good shot of the CPU (courtesy of HardOCP). You see the four black pads on the corners...those keep the die from being crushed or chipped by an unevenly applied HS (heatsink). The "tape" the reference is referring to is usually covering the thermal compound that is on the HS. The tape is usually clear or clear with a logo. The thermal compound is pink, grey or whitish. This can only be used once so mount the HSF (heatsink+fan) carefully. Here is the best reference for installing AMD processors that I have found. Unsurprisingly it's on the AMD website...

It seems that the XP retail heatsinks don't have the plastic over the thermal pad on the heatsink. I thought maybe my eyes were tricking me on mine, but when I started picking at it, it was just the somewhat tacky pad that would almost start to come up. I didn't have a clear piece of tape. My roommate just bought an 1800+ and his didn't have any tape either. My cpu is running fine now, although it is a 1600+ not an 1800. I think it's running around 35 degrees Celsius.

Without the rubber pads, ur core would be squashed like a bug by the heatsink. Are you sure they aren't there? They are the black rubber pads at the corners of the proc.

the rubber pads help equalize the pressure the hsf puts on the chip and prevents the hsf from cracking the core. if the chip doesn't have the rubber pads, i would return it.
