Epox 8KHA+: got THE email from Newegg RMA

I RMA'd a dead 8KHA+ to Newegg (and please, I was very careful and thorough in my work and analysis, and this board was DOA). I just got an email (too bad they waited so long) that said it was "no longer available and they were crediting my card.

So rather than go through this again, I think I'll got to our local shop and have them install the CPU, memory and HSF for me on the motherboard. I wanted this experience (but I got it, just not to satisfactory conclusion 🙂 ), but this way they can warrant that the damn thing posts.

So, what should I get? If they have the Epox, I suppose I could try that again. I also hear good things about the dragon plus. I'm putting in all high end gear and a fast CPU, so I don't really care about overclocking. Except for the DDR, I'd think about a P4. Is there a P4 mb that takes PC2100 DDR?

Yes, there are P4 DDR mobos with these chipsets from slowest to fastest: i845D, P4X266, P4X266A, SIS645 (uses PC2700 DDR)

The Sis 645 is quite futureproof since if you buy PC2700, the P4 gets even more of its needed bandwidth. But why do you want a P4? The Athlon XP is the way to go because of the price/performance. Go reread some more benches and pricing info, and you'll quickly dismiss the P4 as a viable processor (yes, you'll consider intel a rip-off company).

I hope I don't come off to shrude here, but........if your first car broke down off the lot of the dealer, would you try to "RMA" it, and then take the bus cause leaving the driving and maintance to someone else is easier?

All that I am trying to say, is stop, think, and try building your own, you CAN do it. Its not your fault the board was dead.

I prolly can't change your mind, but atleast give it another thought. And whatever you do, have fun with it, life is to short to sweat the small things.

I would tend to agree. Just get another mobo and try again. It wasn't your fault or anything, and it sounds like you know what you are doing (unlike so many other first-timers 😉).

Thanks, that's actually good advice and well pitched. I tend to think in analogies, so this struck a chord with me.

What I think I'll do is buy locally and understand the local shop's return policy. I was so psyched to build this machine (and my leftovers are going to my kids - not for Christmas now), that I was so bummed when the Newegg RMA process robbed me of 2 weeks. and now for nothing - I got a credit on my card. So even if I spend more locally, at least I can deal with the problem in a day.

Thanks for the advice.
