Epox 8KHA+, best CPU w/ PC2100?

I've got an Epox 8KHA+ w/ a Tbird 1600+ (1.4Ghz), and 512MB of Crucial PC2100, that I want to put something faster in, without having to up memory speed. Is a 2400+ Tbred (2.0Ghz) a good upgrade considering (I think) it's the fastest w/ 266FSB? Or is there a lower speed Tbred that will overclock easily air cooled to about the same speeds that the 2400+ would O'C to?

Or if can use a 333FSB CPU, could my RAM handle 166FSB, or could I run in async mode?

Is there a good chart somewhere that shows all varients of Athlons (core, actual Mhz, bus, cache)?

Cruacial PC 2100 can easily handle PC 2700. As long as you do not use more than 2 stick on 8KHA+.
The problem for you is that the board does not support T'bred processors, only Palominos up to 2000.
I sold my old system with Palomino Aroya for that reason just few weeks ago.

You can try but without BIOS supporting CPU you can have all sorts of problems. The best Palomino is XP 1600, either Agoia or Aroya but it will be hard to find. They overclock 300-350 MHz.

Epox.com shows for the latest BIOS for EP-8KHA+:

"Patch the stability while using Athlon XP 2600+."

Is that an unofficial support thing?

You are right, this is actually the only BIOS they released in 2003. I do not know what that means, it is certainly worth trying. Also there are different revisions of this board, I had 1.3 but there was revision 2 after mine.
It was undoubtedly the best KT266A board and worth keeping if you can use T'breds.

Look here:
CPU support for Epox

It does support T'breds up to 2600. You will apparently have to upgrade the BIOS.

I have the same board that you have (8kha+) with a 1600+ oc to 2000+. I currently am running 11X150=1650. I have crucial pc2100 ram in (3 sticks of 256mb). I have ordered a 2500+ Barton from NewEgg to see if that will work with my motherboard. I flashed the board with the new BIOS last night. Now, for some reason it says I have a 1700+, which is strange because it is showing the multiplier as 11 and the FSB as 150. SiSoftware Sandra also shows 11X150.

I dont want to replace my board now because of all the hassel that comes along with that and the operating system. I am running Windows XP. Usually when I upgrade my Motherboard, I wipe my hard drive and do a fresh install of the operating system.

I hope that I can push the multiplier up to 13 and keep the FSB at 150 to give me 1950 MHZ. But we will see when it arrives. I have been hearing that the new chips are unlocked, so that will help. If not I will have to conect the bridges myself.

I will let you know what happens when I try to install the new 2500+ Barton.

Take care.

Was gonna say welcome to AT, but looks like you've been here 2 years. :)

Yes, please let me know if your 2500+ Barton works and passes some stability tests.

FalconsClaw, that Barton may not work.
This chart shows that highest CPU you can use, and it depends on which board revision you have. Luckily I have 2.0.

Thank you for the tip. I actually go the chip in last night but I have not had a chance to install it. FYI, all the boards made were 2.0 as I understand it. I heard that the ones that were printed with 1.2 or whatever were misprints. I don't know for sure, but I have a 2.0. By the way, the chip is a retail week 29 and here are the numbers (AXDA2500DKV4D Y867217250834 AQXEA0329XPMW) I will install today and let you know. However, doing some research on the internet, I found someone that was able to do it. He had the same board but a 2600+ and he cut the bridges to get the board to register a multiplier of 13. I will keep you informed.

Take care.
