Epox 8KHA+ and dying memory

When I built this system in November of 2001, I didn't have any problems with the memory or the mobo itself at all until around the end of January. My computer rebooted itself while a game was loading. Then at bootup, I would just get the C1 code on the mobo and beep after beep after beep... I know this topic has been discussed before because I've read about this problem happening to other people with Epox boards (not just the 8KHA+ and in some but rare cases not even Epox boards). Basically, what had happened was my memory died.. I had two sticks of 256mb PC2100 DDR in memory slots #1 and #2. The stick that was in slot 2 died.. well half of it anyway. It went from 256 to 128.

So, I RMAed it with Crucial and got another stick... stuck it in Slot 2 and it died completely the next day. So this morning I got another new stick.. stuck it in the 3rd slot this time and I've been running the system for an hour and so far no problems... hope this one doesn't die.

If it is indeed the second slot that is the problem.. what could be causing it?? I am not overclocking and the voltages are at their default settings. I'm using an Antec SC630 case with a 300w PSU.

System Setup:
Athlon XP 1700+ 1.47ghz
Epox 8KHA+ Nov. 2001 BIOS
512mb PC2100 DDR Crucial
Gainward GF3 Ti200
WinXP Home Edition
 
Don't know if you've read this, but the common denominator in this thread APPEARS to be Micron chips. Not sure about the slot theory - mine was in slot 1 and died after 4 months.

Still far too early to tell what the issue may be, but there does SEEM to be an unusual trend of modern DDR technology crapping out after several months in use. Not too many people in that thread overclock either.

Oh well, my replacement crucial stick is still working (fingers crossed). 🙂

 
wow, i just had the same problem. went from an ECS K7S5a to an EpoX 8KHA+ and in two days the memory died. Don't OC, and i was having problems with the ECS originally so itcould have died in the ECS board. anyway, replacement sticks on the way...

P.S. mine were in slots 1 and 2.
 
I just read an article where 10-15% of DDR memory fails cause they are still ironing out the manufacturing process.
I had my memory fail after 3 months in the K7s5a and went to the EPOX and found out it was bad there too 🙁
So I bought mine in OCt when it was dirt cheap and just had to buy again at twice the price, blah

Great find! Can you post a link to the article, I'm sure people will want to see it.

That explains why Crucial DDR sticks are so easy to RMA - they expect the failures.
 
i just bought an 8kha+ and crucial ddr and now im worried about it dying....should i not take my chances and use my corsair xms 2400 instead?
