EPoX 8k7a VS Gigabyte 7dxr

I am trying to decide between these two motherboards. I was going to wait for the KG7-raid, but it is taking too long to come out and it will take another month or two to have all the correct BIOS fixes to get it working correctly. What I want to know is if you own either of these boards, what do you think of its stability and overclocking ability. Also, if you know of any problems with either, please tell me. I know the Epox has problems with the printer port and in some cases the USB port. The Gigabyte is kinda hard to get right now, but if it's the better board then I will try to get it. Money is not a problem. There is less than a twenty dollar difference between the two. Thanks for replying in advance.

Good luck finding the 7dxr! From what I've heard, the 7dxr is being held back for a bios fix. My local computer shop called giga-byte's distribution center to find out if he could order one and the rep told him that they are being held for a bios fix for 3rd mem slot issues. Take this with a grain of salt however, he might have just been trying to get me to buy something in stock. Who knows, just what I was told and it makes sense because of everyone's issues w/ the 3rd slot.

i am in the same boat as KingA21...i just sold my asus a7v and now i am really looking for a really good, stable, overclockable and a raid motherboard. i want to wait for the sis735 but that might have bugs to start and not that many places sell the epox 8k7a+ and i dont really know of another one. there just isnt enough input for people that just want to get a new motherboard

Thanks for the replies. Anyone else have any thoughts on these two boards? If not, then what do you think about the KG7-raid and the A7V266? Are they worth the wait?

I just put the Epox into a machine I built and I didn't have any problems with parallel or USB ports. There was am issue when you tried to restart it wouldn't start back up, but that was an issue with the NIC which I haven't try to correct yet. If you want RAID, Epox has the 8K7A+ that is the same board with RAID built in.

There isn't a difference in performance, it's more a matter of features (the Giga has more), price ( the Epox is chaper), avalaibility (the Epox is easier to get), and looks (the Giga looks like a designer piece).
See my review. :)

a) This is 100% nonesense. You may wish to check out the Gigabyte forum at amdmd.com with 100 of posts about this board, You would be the first with such an observation. :)

b) there is no issue with the 3rd slot. What are you talking about? The AMD 760 specifications call for registered memory of you use more than 2 DIMM's. That has nothing to do with the 7DXR. It is and will be excatly the same with any other AMD 760 board using more than 2 DIMM sockets, such as the KG7.

Chainbolt, I just read your review. Great review. The Gigabyte looks to be the best board out so far, but what are your thoughts on the upcoming KG7-raid? Do you think the KG7-raid will be a better choice when it comes out or do you still think that the Gigabyte will still be able to stay ahead. I know there can't be a definitive answer on this, but I'm interested to see what you think. Thanks.

The Gigabyte 7dxr will be compatible with the Palomino/Athlon 4, correct?

The 7DXR is Palamino compatible, Giga has pusblished a list with all compatible baords already weeks ago.

Regarding the KG7, who knows? ABIT makes good boards, that's for sure. On the other hand: These boards have exactly the same design, and I don't think there will be any/much difference in performance between them: 8K7A, 7DXR and the KG7. It comes down to features (do you need 2,3,or 4 DIMMs for example), price, availability, and personal taste. :)

That's nice Chainbolt. Glad to hear that nothing's wrong with that board. But, until I can actually find one of these boards, I'm still wondering what the heck is going on. My friend ordered one last week, then they went to back ordered. Then he tried somewhere else, backordered. Now there isn't a place on the internet where you can find one (please prove me wrong as I would REALLY love to have this board too).

kilmanjaro,

A few days ago, 3 to be exact, I ordered my 7dxr from www.motherboardexpress.com and it arrived yesterday. So the board is out there, you'll just have to pay a little higher prices if you really want it bad enough, there was one other place that "supposedly" had it in stock when i e-mailed them, but i can't remember what site that was right now, if i remember i'll post back. good luck with your search for the board.

I would buy the 7DXR based upon my experiences with both boards. I would not rule out the Gigabyte 7VTX board either as it has shown to be just as stable and almost equal or better in performance to the both of these boards.

The 7DXR looks to be the winner. Now all I have to do is find this board. Hopefully I won't have to deal with vendors lying to me. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Thanks for the link to the review Phobos. The differences between all the motherboards seem minute. Except for the kt266 which is left in the dust. I'm not sure how the stability is for the rest of the motherboards though. The Gigabyte seems to be the most stable from what I have heard.

Phobos:

The review you referenced evaluates the GA7DX, NOT the GA7DXR (the new, blue one).

<< Uh before you buy either of those boards maybe you should take a look at this roundup...

http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rid=33933

you will quickly see that those are 2 of the slowest boards for the AMD chipset
>>

Gasman is right, that is a totally different board, came out half a year ago, goes up only to FSB 133, looks different.

No: the 7DXR and 8K7A are the kings of the AMD 760 hill.
