Epox 8K7A ide controller going bad?

I've been having numerous problems ghosting, installing etc with 2 hard drives and have eliminated a whole bunch of possibilities. What I'm now finding out is that my mb only recognizes the primary master drive on ide 1.

Ide 1 slave is simply not recognized or rarely recognized then a freeze happens at some time when accessing it. I've never had a controller go so would appreciate any info from anyone with experience at this troubleshooting. The ide 1 slave channel being flaky is the only common thread now.

Ide 2 primary and master are recognized normally although I haven't used the plex burner on ide 2 slave.

Do you have a spare ide cable that you can plug in to see if your present one is bad? (You could temporarily try using the ide cable from the 2nd bus to test, it the hd works, get a new cable ) Check the pins on your second hd to see if any are loose. In bios, make sure that the settings are set to auto detect. When is the last time you updated your bios and/or bus drivers?

that's a good suggestion but I've tried that already

swapped ram, drives and order on the cable
one hard drive was bad and is going back, another one failed a week ago
