Epox 8K7A, AMD 761, VIA: Questions That Need Answers.

Hey,
Well, I've decided that I'd rather get a Epox 8K7A and 512 PC2100 (From Crucial), instead of an Asus A7V133 with 512MB SDRAM (Mushkin), is this a good choice? Well I'll be running a 1.2GHz "C" Thuderbird, and have just a few questions...

1)With the Epox, since it uses teh 686B southbridge, is it affected by all those Live! mishaps, or even large file transfers across the IDEs?

2)Since it has the VIA southbridge, what portion of the 4-in-1's are required to be installed?

3)Does AMD release new updates for teh 760 chipset? If so, where can I get them?

4)Does anyone know where I can find this board in Canada, or realtively cheap online?

5)Is this the best DDR board out at the moment using the AMD chipset? I'm trying to findout which has the best performace/stability, any input on this is greatly appreaciated. And I require the use of multipliers and FSB (will be OCing)

1)I heard that the 686B actually runs fine with the AMD761 northbridge, but either way, the fix is out in the form of VIA 4in1 4.31, there should be no problem.

2)IRQ, INF, IDE. Basically everything except AGP.

3)Try AMD's site, you'll need the AGP driver to get the most performance out of it.

4)Sorry, Im no help here.

5)Yes, to sum it up. It is the most feature rich AMD760 board in the market, it's great for tweaking. Another board to consider would be the MSI K7 Master, they're both good.

All of the drivers you will need are included on the install disk. Just get the board, you will not be disappointed...it's the best mobo I've ever had...well so far anyways.

I second X14's comment. This board now officially supports the Palomino processor as well, just grab the latest BIOS. I assume that "Updated CPU ratio table for new Athlon CPU" means that they have added support for the Pal anyways.

I spoke too soon. I read that a v1607 BIOS can be found here. Warning: I have no idea if this is a legit BIOS; I can't find it on Epox's web or ftp sites. If someone tries this, let the rest of us know if it's OK -- if you can. <EG>

The 1606 and 1607 BIOS versions are basically the same as far as I can tell. I have been running the 1607 version for several days without a problem. I noticed that the 1607 version was last modified about 3 hours after the 1606 version was.

Any other input? Does AMD update their chipset drivers like VIA does? I can't seem to find them on their site.

Here's another vote for the Epox. Great board. My system has been up and running for a few weeks now without a problem. Running a 1133Mhz T-bird @ 1400 (bought from compuwiz1) with no problems as well.
