Epox 8k5A2+ reboot bug?

I've had this board for a few weeks now and a I like it, except for one small thing; I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this and/or can tell me how to fix it:

The computer will boot correctly after a complete shutdown (ie, turning it on in the morning or hitting the reset button) but hangs probably 50-75% of the time that I try a soft reboot (Start-->shutdown-->restart in Windows XP & 2k). It will shut the computer down, bring it back up, get to the POST test, and then stop. The memory count does not come up, nor do the multiplier settings or DRAM clockspeed (I've got that goofy splash screen disabled :p )Now, at this point, I can hit DELETE and still get into the BIOS and once there just choose "Exit without saving", which will restart the computer, or I can hit the reset button. But otherwise it just sits there. Won't go through testing the RAID controller or bring up windows. Any ideas as to why this might happen? It's not a big problem; just an annoying one.

As you describe it, it doesn't look like the processor locked up or a BIOS routine crashed. I'd guess that something does not respond to the reset signal properly (like the RAID controller) and the BIOS initialization routine is waiting for it. It really should time out and give you an error message. If you wait like 15 minutes does it ever go on, or display an error message? (Not that that would help.)

If there is a newer BIOS, now is the time to try it.

This does not happen on either of the 8K5A2+ boards I have here. Which bios are you using? I would suggest at the very least to update to the official 8/15 bios, or even better, update to the 9/05 bios which I use on both of mine. It could also be a specific component in your system causing the hang, but that is less likely.

I'm using the 8/15 BIOS right now; this is the one that the board came with. Where can I get the newer one? The only one I see listed on Epox's site is the 8/15.

And on another note, it took me three tries to get the thing to boot this morning - it kept hanging up. It would stop after that "Magic Health" banner appeared at the bottom durring POST: it would show temps, then the Fan Speed lable, but no number for it. Here again, I could hit Delete each time to enter the BIOS, so I know the system is still working and it's not a "hard" freeze. I didn't have time to mess with it this morning, but when I get home I'll re-boot it and let it sit if it hangs, just to see if I get an error message. I'll have to pop the case open and look at the LEDs - I almost forgot they were there.

I don't know that song. I guess the Eagles were ahead of their time : )

Since the computer stopped at the point it was reading the fan speed, you might try disabling the fan-stopped protection in the BIOS, if it is enabled.

The song is Hotel California : You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...

PAB said that in refference to something a new member (somebody's gf, if I remember correctly) in an OT thread. :p

Thanks for the BIOS tip; I'll check it out.
