Epox 8HKA+ / Memory Slot 2/3 problem

\o everone,

I've been reading anandtech for quite a while now. They introduced me to my motherboard - the 8KHA+ from Epox.

At any rate, it has developed a recent quirk.

I have 2x256 PC2100 Micron ram inside and recently the BIOS has been reporting approx 384.

I have removed the modules and tested them indvidually. They both read 256 when in slot one. as soon as they are placed in slot 2/3 they only read approx 128. So there appears to be a problem with slot 2 and 3.

I have flashed the BIOS to the latest rev. Loaded optimized defaults and tried changing the voltage. Nothing seems to work.

The workstation is still remarkably stable...but if this is a warning sign of a failing motherboard I would like to start searching for a replacement as soon as possible.

It is in my best interests at this time to fix this one.

Does anyone have any ideas what can be done to resolve this issue?

Regards,

Consider yourself lucky... since it sounds like your RAM modules are still functioning properly. I had an 8KHA+ a few months ago and the memory slots 2 and 3 killed any DDR modules I put in there... I ended up RMAing about 4 DIMM's in the 5 months I had the board or so... cuz the problem with the memory slots didn't appear until about 2 months in.
I ended up getting a whole new motherboard..

You say that if you put each memory stick, one at a time in slot one, that it reads correctly the whole 256mb? If so, then your mobo is going. Time to buy. Get an NForce.

:(

That's too bad about the board then. I've only had it for a year or so. No overclocking, no misuse, hardly any dust in the case either. It's in a cool well ventilated area and has a nice air cooling system.

Oh well

So...if I get the ASUS Nforce2 Delux should I keep my PC2100 memory? or opt for pc 2700?

What about my Athlon 1600? I would really like to keep the cost down and keep this proc if possible :) But if everyone thinks I would be crippling my new(er) rig with it I can always send it to my other machine and replace the 1.3 duron thats in there...

Also I have a TB Santa Cruz sound card. I should still hang onto that over the nforce sound right?

Just wondering what you guys think. So far im quite impressed with these forums. The posters here seem to be quite knowledgable for the most party and this is just as good as reading the articles

Thanks guys :)

IMO, if you were happy with the performance when you had the 8KHA+ then I wouldn't be worried about the XP 1600+ and PC2100 memory. Unless you're doing things like video editing and such, I doubt you'd really notice much of a difference in everyday computing unless you care a lot about benchmark scores.
As for the turtle beach sound card, I've been hearing a lot about how the Soundstorm on the Asus deluxe board can be compared to the Audigy 2 and such. I haven't heard it myself yet but I think it's safe to say that the onboard sound is as good or better than the turtle beach card.
