Epox 4G4A+ with Maxtor USB HD = NO BOOT! Any ideas?

If my Maxtor external HD (USB, USB2.0) is plugged in, the PC barely starts to Post, and hangs. If I have the HD unplugged until the POST is finished, all goes well. The drive works in Windows just fine.

Is this a known problem with the motherboard not booting if an external USB HD is plugged in?

Thanks!

make sure that the boot order is correct in the BIOS. you should see an option for USB somewhere in there inside the BIOS.

hope that helps.

I doubt he is trying to boot off the usb drive. A simillar problem was comman with the i845D chipset when they came out. They wont boot when the MS mouse was plugged in the usb port and the fsb was overclocked beyond ~145. It was solved via bios update in most mobos. Check if there is bios update available..

No, I am not trying to boot off the USB HD. I'm just trying to get the PC to POST when the HD is plugged in.
Thanks for your responses.

I'm not having good luck with EPoX's FTP site at the moment (trying to download the manual) but you might want to look into the 5V/5VSB jumpers and try setting them to 5VSB. That's just a speculation, don't know if it's even relevant or not. Good luck 😀

I didn't see that jumper, but I'll look into it. Thanks.
