After seeing the TC mention for SotSE in the other thread, I thought I'd create a thread for epic TC's major modifications for games which are/were amazing! I'd like to preference this toward modern games (aka things that people might actually download to play) but why not throw in some classics as well! Try to keep it in the vein of things that make the game barely recognizable, not 'this sick house i found for skyrim'.

Modern(ish):
The Last Days - Mod for Mount and Blade, LOTR/middle earth total conversion. Very detailed, play as either side in the war, I dumped probably 400 hrs in this. Would love to see an updated version for M&B2 (whenever that comes out)

Classic:
In the myriad Half Life mods, I'd like to give special mention to Action Half Life (and by extension, Action Quake), and the spiritual successors, Opera and The Specialist. They ate up a *lot* of my youth and many a LAN party.

The grandaddy of modern MOBAs, Warcraft 3 DOTA. Lots of WC3/blizzard mods would qualify in this list of amazing TC's (birth of tower defense, for instance) but DOTA really took off and became an absolute monster of its own.

What's TC? What's SotSE? Are you looking for mods in general? Large-scale mods or just well designed mods?

TC = Total Conversion.
SotSE = Sins of a Solar Empire (No, the abbreviation doesn't match the name. Never understood how it became the common abbreviation)

You don't see TC's much any more. I run a lot of mods on a variety of games (Skyrim, Stellaris, Cities Skylines, etc), but none that I really would call a TC these days. Closest would be Distant Stars for the aforementioned Sins of a Solar Empire.

Some of my favorites under the Classic category:
Desert Combat for BF1942
Hard Justice for BF2
Borg Incursion for Star Trek Armada 2

I play more old games than new, so off the top of my head:-

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (White Night)
Deus Ex 1 (Nihilum / The Nameless Mod)
Diablo 2 (MedianXL)
Doom 1 (Aliens)
Doom 3 (The Dark Mod)
Half Life 2 (Black Mesa)
Morrowind (Arktwend)
Neverwinter Nights 1 (D20 Modern Mod)
Oblivion (Nehrim: At Fate's Edge)
Skyrim (Enderal)

Sorry, yeah, Total conversion mods, and come to think of it, I don't know why Sins ever got turned in to SotSE either. Never seen it as SoaSE. Anyhow, just mods extensive enough that the original game isn't really recognizable.

Neverwinter Nights 1 (D20 Modern Mod)
Oblivion (Nehrim: At Fate's Edge)
Skyrim (Enderal)

Those fit the bill nicely!

I also remember a lot of mods for Tribes being near enough to TC in that none of the original weapons, armors, etc were used. Some of those were nuts with extensive base-building and whatnot.

FCOM for Oblivion.
Super Terraria World for Terraria.
All of the 40K Dawn of War games have massive overhauls, but you'd have to see for yourself which ones you want to use (some have multiple ones).

There's probably others, but I haven't had enough time lately to bother with modding my games.
