Well it should be a bit easier then building hardware and software. Epic just really needs a forum, feedback and early access
But will that work? Even with those things, you still have to ask yourself, "Why should I use this over Steam?" That's really the problem that any new product coming into an established market faces. To a degree, EGS's free games are arguably just a tool to help create relevance among gamers to help erode the idea of "Steam = PC Gaming" that has been forged over nearly two decades. I won't say that Steam is perfect; I've complained about its inherent DRM on this very forum. (To be fair, a vast majority of online digital platforms have similar DRM schemes that are skewed against the consumer, so it's worth noting that my DRM complaint is truly against a broad list of platforms.) In regard to past Steam complaints, I would like to note that Steam has fixed the issue with Steam Cloud. Steam now performs a Steam Cloud check before running the game, but a minor issue is that Steam doesn't really tell you that... so it looks like it's taking forever to start the game. It's really more of a UX issue, but I do think it's not a good thing.
Outside of the free games, EGS's shtick is that it "provides more revenue to developers", but in the end... do gamers care about that? Also, is it viable to say that EGS can provide more to developers due to simply not providing nearly as robust of a platform? Do I think the differences are necessarily worth +18%? Probably not. However, similar to the issues with Epic Games vs. Apple/Google, it's really hard to make a nice, solid argument against payment rates, because we have no idea what the costs are to the company providing the service.
