Wow, that's fail on at least two levels.

1) He cut it so that it had a chance of falling on the house - should have cut at a different angle.

2) No rope or line around the tree to encourage it to fall a certain direction.

lol you could tell that the tree already leaned in that direction. Common Sense FTW!

Yup.
In a situation like that you want to hook up a crane or at least a big pickup truck with a LONG rope and make darn sure it cant fall on the house.

Emphasis on the long part. There is a video floating around where they got the first part right but the rope was a tad too short.

I've done trees that size with a chainsaw and just somebody tugging on a long rope. You'd be surprised how easy it is to encourage a tree to go where you want it if it is cut well and you've got 50 pounds of force pulling it where you want it. It was pretty darn stupid to try that with nothing.

LOL fail.

I've cut many trees as a kid, I used to go around cutting dead ones just for fun. Using common sense, I was always within 180 degrees when making a tree fall in an intended direction. Usually I was fairly close to dead on, but it really depends on the wind, and which side it's leaning. It can throw you off a bit.

For a fairly straight tree, the way you cut makes a big difference. My favorite method with a hack saw was making a wedge then make a small cut on the other side of the tree.

YourTube has at least ten of those videos.
I had not idea how common this was.

It must be that Axe Men show... giving everyone confidence that they know how to cut down trees themselves. :)

yeah, only reason I came across them was to see if anyone had videos of a tree limb about my neighbors size to see what kind of damage it does to a house =I

I should hope so...

How does one make a tree fall more than 180 degrees away from where you want it to fall? ;)

So was the guy in the video.

You are aware that 180 degrees off is exactly the opposite direction, right?

That almost looked like he was doing it on purpose to collect insurance money or something. We had a tree about the same size leaning much more than that over our house. Fortunately, my brother has cut down 1000's of trees working for a tree service. All I recall is a notch on one side of the tree, a wedge being pounded into the notch, then another almost level, but not quite level cut. He turned the chain saw off, took a sledge hammer, smacked the wedge 2 or 3 times, the whole tree just pivoted/twisted 90 degrees & fell exactly where he said it would fall. (But, just in case, we were smart enough to have a rope tied to another tree to prevent it from falling on the house, even if it wanted to.) The guys who do that all day long are incredible with what they can do with a few ropes and a chainsaw.

ya. haven't cut down a tree in a good dozen years, but was around plenty that went down before that. dude was in position to cut it down pretty much exactly the way it went, not sure why anyone was surprised.

Guess it was not a good way of saying it. Basically what I meant is if you were to draw an imaginary line, one side containing where I want it to drop, I always would manage to have it drop on that side of the line, not in a total opposite direction. Most of the time I was extremely close though but sometimes they'd go a tad off if I was underestimating it's top weight in a certain direction, like the time I almost hit a boat while cutting near the beach. Oops.

All the person with the camera had to do was use a rope to pull the tree. They all suck. It almost seems staged it was so blatantly obvious.

Like, this really is just moronic. Personally, Ive never cut down a tree, hell, Ive never used a chainsaw...but common sense would let me know this wouldn't work.

I smell insurance fraud hard core...either that or this guy is SERIOUSLY stupid.

That's what I was thinking. Someone mentioned insurance. I wonder if they were filming for insurance purposes?

The only thing that indicates it wasn't a setup, is the end where the one guy runs in front of the camera looking concerned. Maybe they are just idiots :^/
