i used to work at a sushi place when i was in college back in 89.... so my memory is not so fresh....
i do know i had a hard time with sake, since it is both salmon and more commonly rice wine.

There is also the fact that Japanese is a syllabary language that breaks up into well defined components (syllables) that have well defined English spellings. Unlike Chinese, though even with Chinese there is a well defined romanization (Pinyin).

Sweet, would love to have a job in Taiwan. Plan on taking a holiday there sometime. I'm 1/2 Chinese. Mother Chinese, father white. Lived in China, Taiwan (Taichung), and Malaysia for 4 years when I was really young. I speak Mandarin so so 100% fluent pronunciation, like <10% vocab :( kinda freaky sounding. Even freakier is I look almost 100% white. Most Chinese people who hear me speak immediately think I'm completely fluent because I have no accent, so they reply right away and I'm lost after 3 or 4 sentences. I could hold my own traveling as a tourist though, maybe a bit better than that.

the written "sake" is correct for rice wine, although it may not be correct for salmon (it might be, not sure on this. i personally would spell it "shake"). i know, however, that it's pronounced "sa-ke" ("sa" as in "Mensa" and "ke" as in the name "Ken") for the wine and "sha-ke" ("sha" as in "Charlotte") for the salmon.

this is making me hungry... and thirsty ;-)

i have chinese accent in the states, and i have american english accent when i'm in taiwan (according to my cousins)

but yea, i always like to go out and tour the city by myself, more freedom to do anything i want, but more often than not, all my relatives from both side will take me and my white wife (she's got some basica mandarin down, complete with my accent...) out to eat. i've never been to Taichung for longer than a day. but my favorite snack is Sun Cake from that city. I'll always bring a box back, or ask for one if my parents are visiting.
