Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government's latest attempt to protect the Earth's atmosphere.

But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60.

Big Government FTW!
There is no way that overregulation could be costing jobs now could there?

Good lord.

The EPA does some very good work, but it desperately needs adult supervision.

No! No! Bad bureaucrat!

EPA enters into international agreements now? At least you didn't immediately blame Obama too as most other right wing sites have done.

this is a net good for the economy and the earth. I'm glad we can find green ways to stimulate the economy.

This is all part of the Montreal Accord signed by Reagan back in 1987. It was also an FDA advisory panel that in 2006 agreed that they did not meet the requirements of the accord to be considered essential use of chlorofluorocarbons as alternatives were possible (shitty as they may be).

But rage on against the EPA.

Do you have asthma? Have you any first hand experience with these types of inhalers? I haven't refilled my inhaler script for months now because I haven't been able to get the old kind and the new kind are practically just a waste of money they're so inefficient at what they do.

I disagree Matthiasa. Flovent diskus sucks donkey cock. I need 3 to 4 hits off of it to get similar results of the older kind.

Won't 50 cents worth of lead cure asthma? Why should we poison the atmosphere so sick people can have cheaper medicine. Pay thorough the nose if you want to breathe but don't fuck up my air. God I love to rant as a conservative asshole.

I had asthma when I was younger...

In the real world we have something called "cost/benefit analysis". I highly doubt banning this type of asthma medication is the most cost effective way to combat whatever man-made global warming there is. I don't expect any libtards to understand these concepts though. Maybe you should donate more money to Solyndra. lol.

Have your doctor prescribe one with a larger dosage per inhalation, unless you are already at the max they have.

Yeah, I haven't refilled my script in months because of how much I hate the diskus. My only option is non-CFC style inhalers, I'll just go without because the new ones are just a waste of money as far as I'm concerned. Cost more and almost ineffective.

I've tried a few of the other non-CFC kinds as well, not just the diskus. I haven't had any luck with any of them.

Another defective sucking the health care tit on my tax dollar. Ron Paul is right. We should just let the sick die. Bad for the gene pool.

Trolling or srs?

It's soccerballtux. He's one of the worst trolls on the board.

Anyway, let's be clear. People are bitching about the EPA doing this move because of the expense of the new ones. However, they're not even factoring in the fact that you need to go to the doctor to get a prescription, as opposed to getting them over the counter like you could in the past.

So now factor in ongoing doctor visits, prescription costs, insurance.... WOOHOO. Win for business. Loss for us.

I think that the article and the commentary are extremely misleading. If the makers of Primatene don't just switch propellants to maintain market share, they're dolts, and I doubt that's true at all.

Big pharma was behind this effort. Couple of good articles from MotherJones.

http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2011/07/asthma-and-ozone-layer

http://motherjones.com/environment/2011/07/cost-increase-asthma-inhalers-expensive

And on the environmental issue:

THE ENVIRONMENTAL PAYOFF Oh right, that. By upgrading their inhalers, Americans will prevent about 1,300 tons of CFC emissions a year. By comparison, the estimated global CFC emissions between 1986 and 2010 were 8.3 million tons. According to the University of Michigan's Edward Parson, an expert on ozone regulations, this impact will be "tiny."

One estimate suggests that CFC-free inhalers will accelerate the repair of the ozone layer by just a matter of days. And of course, the industry has solved its ozone problem but still has a climate-change problem. "It's just absurd to think that this is anything that could have a measurable impact," says Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a law that raised costs so much for such a nonexistent benefit to the environment."

People are bitching about the EPA on this because they are ignorant little sheep following the GOP talking points about the bad evil EPA. The EPA have nothing to do with the decision on this. I spelled that out earlier. But you won't see the sheep acknowledge that fact now will you. Every right wing site out there ran this as Obama and EPA ban OTC inhalers. It has nothing to do with either. But the puppets will continue to dance as their masters pull their strings.

It is laughably pathetic.
