Envision 42" Plasma 1024x768 hdtv..hot??

Where is there a 42" 1080P LCD available for $1199? Smaller ones yes. In anything less than a 42" LCD is definitly the way to go, but 42" and up is owned by plasma. The only 42" LCDs that come in less than a 42" Panasonic, or Zenith plasma even, are off brands of usually questionable quality. If you put your bargain basement LCD next to a descent plasma of the same size it won't even be close as to which looks better. I haven't seen an LCD short of the Sharp models (which are way overpriced) that look as good as an ED Panasonic when you put them at normal viewing distance.

Now as for this deal, I would recommend passing on it and be watching for sales on LG or Panasonic plasmas. They are both trusted brands and you can find them on sale for under $2000 without a problem. A bit more than this Envision, but when you are making an investment as big as this, it might be smart to pay a bit more now rather than having a big hassle later with poor support.

Speaking from experience, one of the most important considerations in buying a plasma is how well the manufacturer will stand behind it. I had to deal with Viore, Vizio, and Akai and you would not believe how poor their service and support was, and that seems true of many others too. I suggest that you try calling or emailing support before buying any brand, just to see if they can at least be contacted, because any can become a better boat anchor than TV the next time it is turned on.

No worries here. it sounds like the manufacturer won't stand by it at all, so impossible to have bad support:

"This item is covered by Costco's guarantee to refund your purchase price if you are not completely satisfied. Costco's guarantee applies, even though this item may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty, because Costco is not an "authorized" dealer of the merchandise."

But it's costco so it's all good......

Any idea if one if these will fit in a 96 saab 900 4 door hatchback?

Tempted, not sure about the HDMCIA lack of or whatever though...

..may fit in the Saab if ya take it out of the box. They come in massive shipping cartons.

They are too large as packaged and, as quoted above, and I am not too sure they would fit even if taken out of the box. I have an Aurora and a Chrysler LXI and it will not fit in either. If you decide to try it, be extremely careful in how you try to place it in the Saab becasuse the packaging is really needed for protecting the screen. Do a quick Ebay search for broken screen plasmas and you will see what I mean. Seems the panel is so wide the screen will break easliy in transporting it if not in its package. Also, from what I have read, if you make the mistake of putting it face down on carpet, even when removing from the box, it can damage the screen. A few poor souls reported having theirs ruined and not getting the warranty coverage because breakage was not covered.

Wow what a moronic question: "Is $1499 a good price for a plasma?" is just like asking "is $25K a good price for a car ?" .

It all depends on the specific model. Not all plasmas are the same.

From consumer reports: "Less-familiar brands of plasma TVs being sold at big-box chains cost much less than major brands. While their prices are tempting, the sets we've tested have been middling to mediocre, so you'll sacrifice some picture quality."

From CNet: "Picture quality varies greatly between different makes of plasma, so be sure to read reviews before you plunk down your cash"

OP == pwnZd

Unless things have changed drastically, I would not waste money on an Envision. I used to have a 15" LCD which I got rid of - it was a load of junk and my brother has a 17" They are horrible displays with poor color and look very washed out. Of course that was 3 or 4 years ago, but generally companies don't change that much. The ones who make em well are the ones who continue to. And to Bekker, Dell Ultrasharps blow away Envision.
