i've done a lot of research looking for my 2nd scope. my 1st one was an ill informed and stupid impulse buy.

whatever you do, DO NOT buy one you would generally find in stores like wal-mart or sears, especially it they really go overboard telling you about how much magnification it has.

a great and really helpful (and nice) site about telescopes is CloudyNights. The people there are extremely nice and helpful, unlike most of ATOT.

go to their forum and you'll find hundreds of posts asking evry similar questions to yours.

a Dobsonian is usually the recommended type of scope to buy for beginners because they are relatively cheap for the size scope you can get and are very simple to operate. if you must have some sort of tracking feature then a Dob isn't your choice since they aren't made with that. you can buy kits to mod them for tracking but they're really expensive.

Meade and Celestron are the biggest companies and make decent scopes. Orion makes great Dobsonians. I have a SkyQuest XT8 Intelliscope.

is this for a child or adult? either way the SkyQuest XT6 Classic would be a great beginner dobsonian scope.

I'm not too familiar anymore with the other types of scopes. Orion makes a great product though.
