Entry level laptop?

Hello, a friend of mine is in search of a basic laptop to bring to college, and I'm trying to help her pick out the best one (for the cheapest price of course).

The requirements are few, since she will be using it mostly for e-mail, typing papers, Internet, listening to music, i.e. typical college stuff. She needs a wireless card but it seems pretty much every notebook these days comes with one. She'd also like to be able to hook it up to her LCD while at home - I'm not sure if the video cards on basic laptops have a DVI slot or if she'd need to get a VGA/DVI connector.

I'm not very familiar with the mobile processors or what manufacturers make good laptops. What would people recommend for a very basic, yet solid, laptop? Price range <$700 if possible.

Thanks in advance.

I am going to order that one for my wife Justa.
Very nice indeed.

Cant believe prices have fallen so far.

I would've gotten it for myself... but my $400 Compaq I got at Walmart last November still serves me well...

OK, I put 2GB RAM and got the free Vista Home Premium upgrade from HP at NO cost at all.

That's why I would not even think about buying any computer of any other brand than HP.

14" is a good and portable size for college methinks.
You might be able to get a good deal on a R-series from Lenovo (IBM).

Yeah I am an HP boy when it comes to laptops. My new 9500t laptop is everything to me, not s ingle thing I didn't want.
