I just borrowed a Canon Rebel G from my school, and somehow the point and shoot and simple digital cameras just don't cut it anymore. So what's a cheap (but good) SLR these days? I'm thinking somewhere around the $250USD/$300CND area.

Hey, it's me again from that time you posted this topic in software. Did the flash advice work?

Are you looking for just a body or one with lens? I would try going to

http://www.photographyreview.com/35mm/PLS_3105crx.aspx

Sort by number of reviews, and keep in mind that the prices that you see are old prices. For example, photographyreview.com says the Nikon N80 is $600+, but the actual price on the market now is around $200 for the body.

There's been a lot of camera threads lately. Though there are a good amount of knowledgeable people here. There are a lot more camera people on www.dpreview.com forums.

edit: it is for digital photography, but there's all sorts of photography people there.. people who started with film and people who are going back to film.

Better off buying a used SLR with good lenses. Modern SLR's have too many electronic gee-gaws that take away from the skill.

Of course I'm biased because I like fiddling with true manual controls.

I like Canon & Minolta cameras for this purpose. Personally I have a Minolta SRT-101 well within your range but you're probably looking for a more capable camera. I would probably recommend a Canon Elan series camera with a few decent lenses.
