You can't change lenses on that model. If you are looking for the ability to change lenses, you are looking at $500 and up. And yes, you generally have to stay within a brand name to keep the lens compatibility.

Unfortunately, the current mounting system for Canon lenses was changed to the "EF" style in 1987, your dad's lenses are probably the older "FD" style and won't work. There may be an adapter out there somewhere, but I'm not sure.

Also my father has canon slr from the early 80s with a 6 different lens attachments. Would I have to get a canon in order to be able to share the lens with him? Thanks

That is NOT a dSLR. The camera you have selected is in the mega zoom point and shoot catagory, having a 10x optical zoom.

Any EF mount lens will work with all present Canon dSLR bodies. If you don't know which camera to get, please read through the many "which dSLR should I get" threads and then post what requirements you want. Check out the resource thread for sites to learn about dSLRs.

I don't think it'd be worth it to use FD lenses with the Canon DSLR's. It can be done though, but you lose quality in the process. There's a summary of information here a couple paragraphs from the top.

If you decide to go the adaptor route though, B&H has at least one available:
here Read the article above; not all FD lenses can be attached using the adaptor.

here's some more info.
