Entertainment Books: Do you buy them? Are they worth it?

I'm thinking about buying one for Los Angeles, and possibly another for Vegas. They're $30 each, and have a ridiculous amount of savings in them... tons of "buy 1 get 1 free" deals for everything from a Whopper at Burger King to a ticket at the Hollywood Bowl. There are also vouchers for up to 12 movie tickets @$5.00 apiece, and 50% of your final bill at fancy restaurants... I figure I'll break even after a few movie tickets/dinners out.

Yes they're worth it, but I prefer the cheaper $10 Gold C coupon books for even more savings!

The best source for Entertainment coupon books are co-workers with kids who are active in school fund raising.

Even if you just use them a couple times, they pay for themselves with free food.

I use maybe 0.5% of the coupons each year but I still save money.

If having the book gets you to go to expensive places that you wouldn't have gone to otherwise, you aren't really saving. Watch the movie ticket thing - they can have a lot of restrictions so read the fine print carefully.

I get one every year because I know I'll get my money's worth. One car rental and one meal puts me ahead. I'll trade coupons with friends so we all get more coupons for the places we go to often.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some of the restaurants that use the card punch (vs. coupons) won't punch your card so you can come back again. It's hit or miss, though.

Naw, i did a few times back in high school when they had the student deals, i never end up using more than 1 or two things anyways.

There was a thread on fatwallet where you could get them for 10-15

I believe that was for only 2003 edition which coupons expire in a few weeks.

Dezign will most likely purchase the new 2004 edition which is good for 1 year.

You oughta be able to get them cheaper, but if you make it a point to use it, you will get your moneys worth.
Some tips:

For BOGO they eliminate the cheapest meal, so it's pointless to get a $7 dish when the other dish is $15. You'll maximize your value if you try to match the prices of the 2 most expensive things you order.

A lot of restuarants place restrictions on Entertainment coupons. Make sure you can use the coupon for the time you are there and for what you are ordering BEFORE you order.

Keep the book in your car. When you're trying to decide somewhere to go, grab the book and let it be your guide.

Try and get other people in on it. You can usually use two coupons per table, sometimes more. My parents go out with a group of friends and they all have the book, so they all try a new place and basically eat 1/2 price.

Gold C coupon books are the ghetto version of the Entertainment $30-$45 coupon books. They feature less fancy/formal attire dining and more casual and fast food dining. Plus they only cost $10 vs $30, we buy 3-5 every year. Like kranky I swap coupons with family, friends and co-workers. I'm not sure if they're available for all cities. I would suggest asking parents who have kids active in school fund raising.

Yep it's a good way to help a good cause and you save a lot of $$$ which would make any Ferengi grin from lobe to lobe.

Good and bad news for Californians looking for the cheaper Gold C coupon book.

Bad news: It's not available for areas other than Sacramento, CA.

Good news: You can order it over the phone by calling Entertainment at 888-231-SAVE it's $13 shipped this includes sales tax and shipping.

Other states have thousands of Gold C coupon books available just call 888-231-SAVE for availability and pricing.
