About four weeks ago, I found out that a job that I had really wanted was not going to work out. They said that they would need hours that I was unable to provide, etc. Since that job was not going to happen, I went out and put in applications.

About three weeks ago, I was hired as a delivery driver. Pay was alright. I told the interviewer that I was going to school and had bigger and better things that I was working on. He still hired me. Fine and good. At least he knows.

Today, I was contacted by the company that I really wanted to work for and was informed that they had an opening that would work for me. Their pay was about $6,000/year better. Plus, I really wanted it. I accepted the position, even though I had been with the company for only three weeks.

Tonight, after work, I tell the boss that I got a different job, apologize for inconveniencing him and give him my two weeks notice. What happened is that there are two drivers. I got hired as the ride along, a week after I got hired, the main driver quit. Therefore for two weeks, I was the main driver. Two days ago, they hired someone else who knows nothing about it. Therefore, I have been in charge of training the new guy.

Basically, the boss says that I needn't bother coming in at all anymore. I ask him why he's firing me, even though the new guy doesn't know jack sh!t yet. He says he's not firing me, he just wants someone who will be a <gag> team player. I said, well I tried to do you a favor by giving you two weeks, but my company will have me start Monday. He says fine, he doesn't need unethical people around anyway. I was pissed off, he was pissed off. I clocked out, got my sh!t, and left.

Well, now here it is, three hours later, he calls me, says he made a mistake, and would really appreciate it if I can just work with the guy for one week. I told him I already made arrangements to start at my new job on Monday. He went on a profanity laced tirade about how I was leaving him high and dry. I pointed out the fact that I mentioned that very thing but he was too pissed to hear about it. He swore at me some more and hung up.

He's pissed, he's down a guy, he's screwed. And I'm laughing.

Nice. Maybe he'll learn a lesson, but more likely he's going to take it out on the new driver.

Yeah dude, I'm starting as an apprentice knowing almost nothing other than what my grandfather has taught me. He was a member of the same union for 52 active years. He worked from the time he was 22 to 74. He retired last year so that he could redo his whole house. The guy is amazing.

I must say though, I never would have bothered the guy for a job had I known this would have happened.

The idiots who think all union members are slackers are just that...idiots. Union labor built this country, and the best work still comes from union labor.
Welcome to the union family brother.

You did the right thing. I would have giving him the notice on paper and made a copy for myself, that way you can say, look at that paper i gave you, you freaking B****. I would have then taken him to small claims court and got money out of it. :)

Gee, I wonder why you arranged to start the new job on Monday? :p
Guy sounds like a bit of a moron. You at least offered 2 weeks notice, not "I'm leaving right now, goodbye." The job terms probably said something like "This job is at-will. The employer may terminate you at any time for any reason, with or without notice, and the employee may quit at any time for any reason, with or without notice." That's how it was at my warehouse job. I quit, I gave about 6 hours of notice, reason being that I was returning to college, but had some landscaping to do at home first. They're used to quick turnover, and that was more notice than they usually get, which is either walking out or not showing up. Manager asked what I was going to college for, shook my hand, and said "Thanks for letting me know."
I only gave 6hrs notice because I didn't want to risk them putting me on some crap work.

Have you told your grandfather yet? If you did, I'll bet he's proud.. :)

You have done the right thing, Mister Dain.

I want to think that your evil boss rocked himself to sleep that night, alone in a bed of his own making.

Good for you.

I'm sure the new guy will be fine, how hard is it being a driver? Sure, there might be a few things to pick up, but, the boss will just have to work it out.
