Football is Football. American Football is called American Football.

Translated to American English:

Soccer is Football. Football is American Football.
 
Football is fu'tbol, actually

and do you want me to put on a hula skirt or something, I don't think my answer was entertaining enough
 
Well we can't call American football 'handball' as that already exists and is highly popular in Germany etc. Throwball doesn't sound snappy enough, so guess we are stuck with American football, although the use of the foot is highly questioned. 🙂 Personally if you were using another word to describe 'soccer' I'd prefer foosball or fussball eg table foosball. Soccer just sounds so wrong. 🙂
 
I never understood that. Did we call it soccer before American football was around? Why did we call it football when there was another type of football around to cause this confusion?
