Should get my car back from the dealer today. Last thursday, as I was on my way home, my engine started grinding. Well, more than usual. So I pulled off the road, popped the hood, and troubleshooted it down to my air conditioner. Thank god I spent the 1200 or so dollars on the extra warranty, because I am still covered for the next 9000 miles. I set up an appointment that day with a local dealer to get it worked on. They told me they would do it monday morning and get me a rental car. Great...sounds like I might only miss a half hour or so of work.

Got to the dealer, they called Enterprise. Said it would take about 30 minutes but I might have to pay for the rental car if the problem isn't covered by my warranty. I agreed and sat down. 40 minutes later the dude from enterprise shows up in this dirty, ratty looking Mitsubishi. Muttered under by breathe hoping this was not the car I was going to get. He had to pick someone else up at the place too, so we went on the other side of the building and he brings out this old grandma. So I get in the back seat.

Enterprise was hoppin. All 4 of their reps were running around. At least 5 of us stood in this tiny waiting area as the reps mumbled to themselves about lack of cars. The phone was ringing off the hook from all kinds of car dealerships wanting pickups and vehicles. Waited another half hour or so for a car and the helpful (to the point of jerkish faking) guy lead me outside to this green Focus.

First words out of his mouth is, "Well, it has this crack in the windshield". The crack was a spider web crack stretching a good 12-18 inches right across the view height of the driver. 3 out of the 4 tires on the car were under inflated and bald (so they have been underinflated for a long while). One tire looked brand new (made me wonder why they replaced that one and not the rest). It was missing a hubcap, but the others were not well off. The doors were peppered with the paint of dozens of different car doors. The windshield wipers were reversed and falling off the blades. It was a mess.

I'm signing off the paperwork and he made the statement of "Well I would hate to tell you that we don't have a car for you". In other words, It's either this or nothing buddy. Over an hour later than I wanted to be and watching the other customers drive off in alot nicer cars, I begrudgingly accepted the car and drove cautiously through the cold downpour barely seeing the road and praying that the tires had enough grip to get me to a gas station. Filled the tires with air (they were all under 10lbs of pressure!) and limped my way to work. Happend to be passing by another enterprise and had to stop in and show the guy what their buds had given me.

It's not that I am above driving a Focus. Heck, I would even look passed the crack in the windshield and the dings, but the car was a deathtrap and should not have been on the road during a good day, let alone during a cold hard rain. They switched me to a low end saturn, and I went on my way.

Overall, I am extremely put off by enterprise. In my head I saw the S-10 gene got when his car was being worked on. Clean, brand new, excellent vehicle. Not a car you would laugh off the road and smelled like wet cat. Thank god my repairs are going to be covered and Chrysler is picking up the tab on the car, 'cause I am sure as sh@t not going to pay 35.99/day for either vehicle. These 2 cars make my breeze seem like friggin royalty and that is saying alot...

I had a somewhat poor experience with them too. 2 summers ago my gf and I called around to a bunch of rental agencies in the No. VA area looking for a convertible. It was September and we wanted to take a trip down to Williamsburg.
We had never driven a convertible before so that was kind of the whole point, to enjoy the weather.
So we found that a local Enterprise had a Chrysler Sebring convertible. We reserved it about a week and a half in advance.

Well, we go to pick up the car on a Saturday morning. It was pretty busy there. We ask for the car, and the person at the desk seems a little confused. Turns out one of the sales reps had rented out that car yesterday. We got upset. They said "I don't know why they did that, the reservation is right here in the computer". Wow, great!

They offered us a Maxima and said it had a "sunroof and CD player". Gee, that's the same. :frown:

Anyway, eventually they had to call around to other Enterprises and thankfully they found another convertible. They shuttled us over to the other location, and it turned out to be a brand new 2002 model with like 2500 miles on it.
We ended up leaving the city about 3 hours later than we had planned and we hit more traffic than we should have.
We still had a great trip, it was beautiful weather, but the experience with Enterprise could have been better.

Earlier this year, I had a similar (but worse) experience with Thrifty. The only car rental place I've had a good experience with so far is Hertz.

I used to use Enterprise quite often because they are the only chain which rents to people 21 - 25 years old.

Most of my experiences were good, I'd usually rent a Neon, Stratus or Grand Am.
