Enterbrain: Wii Outselling PS3 By 3:1 In Japan

Japanese magazine publisher and market researcher Enterbrain has revealed new chart data for January 2007, which shows that Wii hardware sales outsold the PlayStation 3 by almost three to one.

The sales ratio between the two rival consoles was put at two to one in December, appearing to show a widening sales gap in Japan. Enterbrain?s data, which differs slightly from rival research firm Media Create, shows that around 405,000 Wii consoles were sold in January in Japan, compared to around 148,000 PlayStation 3 consoles.

Enterbrain suggests that a wider range of software available for the Wii and the PlayStation 3?s high price point are the main reason for the disparity in sales. The firm calculates that the Wii has now sold 1.4 million units to date in Japan and the PlayStation 3 614,000 units. Sony?s pre-launch plans had called for 1 million unit sales before the end of 2006.

"There could be a price cut for the PS3 by the end of the year, and more software titles will hit the market. I expect the PS3 to be doing better after a while," said Enterbrain president Hirokazu Hamamura in a Reuters article on the data. "Of course, the Wii will keep running ahead all the while."

(Indeed, recent weekly charts from Media Create have seen even larger margins, with the most recent seeing 83,754 Wii consoles sold versus 19,996 PlayStation 3 units and just 7,365 Xbox 360 units.)

Enterbrain: Wii Outselling PS3 By 3:1 In Japan

Wow, that is an amazing month for Wii in Japan, 405k for January, nice. I'm wondering if they're as hard to find over their as they are here in the States?

is anyone here surprised?

also, i wonder what slight difference there is between Enterbrain and Media Create?

Once the Wii's online capabilities come into shape, things are only going to continue to get worse for the PS3

Not a whole lot of difference;

Sales analysts Media Create also reported that last month Wii was outselling PS3 by three to one, with 400,000 units shifted compared to 150,000. Since launching last November, 1.4 million Wiis have been sold in Japan, while the

Well it certainly isn't a PS3 supply issue anymore. Most stores can't get rid of them now. I still have yet to see a Wii in-stock anywhere around me though.

As someone who doesn't own a wii but wants to... what online capabilities are you talking about (just out of curiosity)?

Online multiplayer games?

Sony?s pre-launch plans had called for 1 million unit sales before the end of 2006.

That was worldwide though, wasn't it? Not just in Japan. Kind of misleading the way they put that in there.

This has been my biggest disappointment about the Wii so far.

I thought it was 2 million worldwide....

It's hard to tell because Sony keeps changing the numbers.

Nope, 2 million worldwide by end of 2006, which they reported to have hit two weeks later (supposedly) in January.

I thought they had 500k at launch and they were shipping another 100k a week

partially true. they are full of the 60GB but the 20GB is still rare, and when you're talking about the difference between $500 and $600 (with relatively little gain), I think it would sell a lot more of the cheaper one if it were in stock.

A lot of people in Japan probably already have a PS2 and the PS3 doesn't give you enough new/more than the PS2 to justify the price.
The Wii is totally different.

Of course I only think that because that is what the article says.

Where's the hate you speak of? I see a thread about the Wii selling better than the PS3, and a bunch of people who aren't surprised because we all know the Wii is selling better than the PS3. Nobody is hating.

Today Sony Corp's President, Ryoji Chubachi, reaffirmed that, saying that Sony is sticking to its target of shipping 2 million PS3s by the end of the year.

Maybe they should have listened to all of us when we said their 80/20 ratio was a little optimistic. 😉

this one isn't quite as bad as some of the others. as someone who doesn't generally have ill-will towards a company, I find it odd that so many people have turned against sony so quickly.
