Ensure seems to be a ripoff.

The doctor tried to get my dad to drink Ensure when he was ill with cancer. He just couldn't stand it. He'd send mom into the kitchen to make him some home cooked food... even if he could only eat a little bit of it. He basically couldn't stomach much of anything, so what little he could he figured it might as well be quality food. He did take a multi-vitamin every day though.

I fully understand the purpose of Ensure. Some days a delicious "milkshake" is all I could bear eating.

But for the three grams of fiber difference it's far more economical to have a Carnation Instant Breakfast with a little fiber stirred in.

Ace Ventura eats catfood for fiber...that might even be cheaper than fiber powder additives.

I want to say they purposefully make the flavored additives cheaper than the non-flavored so they can upcharge for the more versatile of the two. Orange-flavored fiber powder doesn't taste much like oranges.

I looked at an ensure and a Carnation Instant Breakfast (online) nutrition info and they are very, very close. The large number of vitamins listed are virtually identicle. Which they should be since iirc it costs a penny for cereal manufacturers to spray on vitamins on cereals that are "fortified"

Basically both drinks get their protein and calcium from milk and milk products. Carbs from sugar. In fact, just reading the ensure nutrition info next to 8 oz of milk and they are remarkably close, minus the vitamins that are intentionally kept to 25 percent for most in an ensure and a carnation instant breakfast and the calories which differ due to sugar.

Try looking them both up online. I double dare you😀

Here's an even more telling comparison. Ensure to a plain old glass of chocolate milk:

Chocolate milk:
Calories 209
Protein 8 gm
Fat 8 gm
Calcium 28 percent of RDA

Ensure:
Calories 250
Protein 9 gm
Fat 6gm
Calcium 30 percent RDA


The rest of list would be vitamins and they are the same in both Carnation Instant Breakfast and Ensure. Basically all three products are a glass of milk with only added vitamins and sugar as the difference.

An 8oz glass of chocolate milk and a vitamin pill are very close to an Ensure.

The sugars are about 30% different

The costs aren't that different in reality.

If you have a good appetite and are willing to make a meal/shake then you have options.

Ensure is really designed for those that don't want to eat/drink and made to be as simple as possible.

what's going to keep you more satiated? I think a larger # of the calories in the chocolate milk is going to be sugar. Not counting the lactose. Of course milk is casein. Or are you trying to go with something that doesn't fill you up?
