I run a computer business. I had a client bring in a machine for some repair work. and in the process I ended up exchanging motherboard (bad CPU) the new motherboard had a sound card built on. The customer opted to use the new one rather than the old one. The sound card worked fine so I swiped it. Because the customer didn't want it.

I installed the card and the drivers and the sound skips when just playing .wav files. even when all I do is click on the speaker Icon in the systry just to test it. The sound will skip about 50 times before it shuts off. ( i haven't tried cd's or mp3's it's on a work machine and I don't have any of the short on it)
When I installed REd alert and loaded it. it gave a direct sound error. so I downloaded and installed DX8a and it made no difference.

I thought that maybe it was a memory error (like a buffer overflow or something) but that didn't seem to make a difference?

Any assitence? would be helpful.

What does directX diag say about the sound properties. What drivers did you load? Did you load the drivers from the disk that came with that card? Are you installing it on a Win98 system? Maybe the drivers on the disk are Win95.

Driver for Win95/98 from driverquide, looks like version 1.03.

Another driver for Win95/98 from Driverguide.

I am not sure if the gateway version of this card is different than the normal one, but if the card came from a gateway machine you might try going to gateway and get the driver. It was down when I went and looked, so hopefully it will be up soon.
