Resigning mid-investigation makes you look suspicious of whatever they're investigating you for. But I'd have to ask, who the hell is investigating into whether this guy had an extramarital affair (I thought this was confirmed by Ensign already anyways) and not whether he paid hush money to his side honey using campaign money.

Another angle I'm thinking is that by resigning early, this allows the GOP who will probably get appointed and was going to run in 2012 some name recognition against his Democratic opponent. Of course, this strategy could backfire if he has to be on record for towing the GOP line on some controversial bills.

I wonder if Fox News will label him (D) in their reporting, as per their usual (fair and balanced) when some Republican gets caught in a scandal.

It's just force of habbit. It's usually a D when it comes to scandals anyways.

I'm sure they will give this .1% of the coverage of Charlie Wrangle

Now if we could only get the rest of congress to resign...

We don't need the progressives to resign, we need more of them, as now they get almost nothing passed.

Bringing Wall Street under control, deficit reduction, fair taxation, reducing the influence of corrupt interests, and much more they don't have the votes for now.

Good for Ensign, should have been done earlier. (Hell, shouldn't have been necessary.)

I am sure the Nevada Governor can find an even worse smuck to replace him.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

I'm not picky. I'll take any of them resigning. At this point I fail to see how a hundred monkeys typing on computers could do a worse job.

Sandoval certainly has a knack for doing stupid things.

What's interesting about this, if I'm reading the #nvleg Twitter feed correctly, is that the replacement appointed by the Governor is expected to be Dean Heller, current CD2 Rep for Reno. Heller was expected to be the primary contender against Sharron Angle for Ensign's seat when he was up for re-election.

With this, Sandoval basically ensures Angle can't get the Senate seat and forces a no-primary special election for Heller's CD2 seat.

No one's life, liberty or property is safe when Congress is in session.

From my understanding, Ensign thought he was out of the woods when the justice department dropped the investigation into using campaign money to pay hush money.
But when the Senate ethics committee kept the investigation going, ole Jonney decided to resign.

The question is, will the charges finally result in Ensign serving jail time.

If Ensign did the crime, why should he not do the time? Why should resigning from the Senate wipe the crime away?

This is a sign of progress for the Republican party. Even though there was corruption and money paid to hush things up, at least Ensign had an affair with a woman.

Whats the difference between a Republican Senator or House member who is deep in a ethics scandal vs a Democrat?

The Republican ends up resigning, the Democrats just keep on getting re-elected.

Angle wasn't going to run to replace Ensign anyways. She was going to run for Hellers seat (since its opening up).

You mean "Mr. Corruption gets away free again"? Charlie defines filth. Don't know what this guy did, but he resigned making himself less of a target than someone who has no shame at all like charlie.
