Enhancing digital photos

I'm looking for a program that can enhance a digital photo. I have some pictures that are a bit grainy and pixelated. Perfer Open source, for windows is a plus, but if the program is only on linux, it will work. Trialware is also alright.

If you are looking for something that will give you CSI (TV show) type results to turn a blurred bit of mud into a sharp photograph, it's simply not going to happen. If you want something that will let you sharpen the photo a bit, remove some noise, and adjust the color/brightness, GIMP is a very good (and free) option.

I'm not looking to do a CSI deal. I have a few pictures that I had taken, I have cropped them but I also zoomed in a bit, so it looks a bit pixallted. I also have pictures that were taken that appear under exposed, though that is due to the fact the were taken in a fog/mist like enviroment, and the camera flash made it all appear.

I've downloaded gimp, and messing around with it a bit, but I'm looking for more of an idiot proof\less complex software.

To my knowledge, there's nothing you can do to pixelated besides soften the edges and blur the details (read: pixels).
