My friends in Japan right now and met some girl who was wearing a Spread Beaver shirt. Apparently she had no idea what it meant b/c when he explained it to her she turned bright red, lol :). Apparently there are tons of shirts with obscene or just strange english on them there he said he's gonna send me some if he gets the cash.

Personally I'd never wear anything with some random language on it if I didn't personally know what it meant.

haha.. this is funny and so true... I lived in Japan for 15 years and some of their Englsih is pretty screwed up..
on the flip side of that, the Japanese probably try to learn English more than any other group of people try to learn any other language... I mean, Japanese is completely different than English, I know em both.... the characters/alphabet are completely different, sentence structure, accent, letter usage.. everything... and you can find just about as much English around Japan as you can find Japanese... well, most parts.... I've never seen anybody so crazy about learning another language... when I lived there, my mother used to teach English to Japanese friends... she used to teach 3 of them on Saturday nights, for two hours, and make 200$... thats how crazy they are about learning the language, and I give them nothing but credit for trying to learn a language of a country that just a half century ago dropped two of the deadliest bombs in the history of the world on.... I'm not saying the bombs were wrong or right, lets not get into that......just amazing that only a half century could replace the bitterness with curiosity and passion.. thats it.. funny web page though...

edit.. just saw something on the violence jack off link page... that store called "HARD OFF" is actually called "BOOK OFF" ... its a very popular book/video game/movie/magazine buying/rental place in Japan.... I see it all over the place.. musta been photoshopped...

edit:.. just looked through more pics and am beginning to notice more and more photoshopping... for example.. the second picture down.. says "BATARU" in katakana right under the "BATARD" The U was changed to a D... apparently.. I've seen that breat before...

Wow, good eye, sandigga. Now that you mention it, it DOES look like there's a lot of photoshopping going on. The "D" in that "BATARD" pic is a totally different shade and sticks out like a sore thumb if you look at it for a bit. Looking at a lot of the other pics, there's a lot of "noise" around the engrish words, indicating some kind of editting job.

Nevertheless, I suppose this site is based on REAL engrish, and the site's still entertaining.

Guys,

Rest assured that the owner of the site would never consider doctoring any of the photos for false entertainment value (he's an old buddy of mine). He started the site precisely because there was so much great value in presenting the content 'as is'.

Regarding the 'hard off' issue, check out:

Book Off Website

versus

Hard Off Website

Very clearly an issue of copyright infringement by one of the companies on the other's logo...

As far as the 'batard' issue goes, in French, 'batard' *is* pronounced with a trailing "R" and a silent "D"; thus, for a Japanese using the word and approximating the proper pronounciation, the closest thing would be "BA TA RU".

In the meantime, if you guys want more entertainment from Japan, check out some car and companion pics... ;-)

Cheers.

This thread could have been a worthwhile dicussion. Unfortunately certain members had to degrade it down into the depths of hell.
