In my college-level courses, I'm always apprehensive about giving my students any homework assignment that they have to answer in essay form. Half of these 1st and 2nd year college kids can't write a coherent paragraph if their lives depend on it. Some would write a paragraph like how they would talk about it Most of them have so much problem with expressing their thoughts in a concise and cohesive manner.

I'm not surprised. The sad thing is that an abnormally high number of her students want to be doctors/architects/engineers yet are failing miserably at basic algebra/English

Give them essay type questions and grade them accordingly. If you don't have a clue wtf they are trying to say, mark it wrong. They will learn to write properly when the consequence of failing is... wait for it... failure.

Causes:
1. Parents don't care about the education their children are receiving.
2. Entitlement mentality.
3. Teachers only have time and resources to teach to the subjects specifically covered by standardized testing.
