I don’t know where to post this. So I post it here. I hope a moderator or some English expert will give me correct answer. I am really confused about which one is the correct sentence?

1 Which one is correct?
a. She is beautiful.
b. She was beautiful.

2 Which one is correct?
a. They are cool.
b. They were cool.

If both a and b are correct, then why do we have to use “is” or “was” / “are” or “were” if we only need one?

She was beautiful before he splashed hydrochloric acid in her face. They were cool until their parents died in a tragic car accident, cutting off their access to readily spend money on expensive clothing and electronics.

Is = present tense
Was = past tense

Are = present tense
Were = past tense

This.

OP, what is your first language?

Present tense (Now): She is beautiful tonight wearing that dress!

Past tense (Before): She was beautiful before she got cancer.

Future tense (Future): She will be beautiful after losing weight.
