Hi guys! This has been written only in a few hours, and I'm not very good at english.
This essay is for grade 12/OAC and it's based on a Carl Sagan quote.

The essay is of personal choice of topic and style (which I have neither of.. hehe)

Any crit at all will help!

Keep in mind i'm 17 and this is one rough mofo :)

***************

It is very likely that the human race will never fully understand the universe to its fullest. According to Carl Sagan, man just wasn?t meant to know all of the enigmas that are presented in the world. ?Our perceptions may be distorted by training and prejudice or merely because of the limitations of our sense organs, which, of course perceive directly but a small fraction of the phenomena of the world.? (Sagan) Most tend to think our technologies will advance and unravel all of the worlds mysteries by 2021! However, it?s very easy for ones philosophical way of thinking to be stimulated and quickly changed when talking about such things. In the current state of evolution, the human body simply can?t understand all, or even most of the worlds mysteries and happenings. Man is a curious animal, and it?s that curiosity coupled with man?s nature to ?understand? that pushes the race forward to learn. Some things were meant to be understood, and some things clearly were not.

If at this point in time man still can?t decipher why the atoms of a grain of salt hold themselves together like they do, then it is strongly doubtful that the human race will understand worm holes in the near future. Where does one begin if they have no idea how to identify what they are trying to figure out? ?Our sense organs, which, of course perceive directly but a small fraction of the phenomena of the world.? (Sagan) How much is happening around the world that can?t be seen or heard or felt by individuals? People lack the natural ability and senses to detect everything going on around them. Tiny objects floating through the air are not visible, nor felt when breathed in. They are so fine that our vision cannot detect them, and feelings cannot feel them. If this is any example at all, it goes to show that the human body wasn?t meant to detect and understand everything around it, as it just wasn?t made to sense and be aware of the finer details happening all around.

That?s not to say that man hasn?t made amazing discoveries. Being able to map a piece of the Universe is certainly worth mentioning, but what about being able to travel in it? It?s the inner curiosity that is innate to a human being that drives them to learn and understand more about the surroundings they exist in. It is still too early to tell whether or not people will be able to explore the galaxies of the universe like the early settlers explored the great seas. Traveling outside into an unexplored universe is a much greater scale than setting out to sail the seas. However, technology has advanced to such a degree that journeys such as these seem entirely possible in the future.

It will be a long time before we are ever able to leave this galaxy, and explore the universe like the seas were explored in the past. As humans were created with a small planet in mind, man wasn?t meant to live in any other sort of atmosphere. As time has gone by, humans have learnt to adapt to the green world more commonly known as earth. The human lungs can only breath the rich oxygen that the trees and plants produce. Humans are also adjusted to a very specific and timed climate. The cycle of life is dependent on too many variables. The chances of these variables being created again somewhere else in the universe to provide a new home for man is a very interesting possibility. If it were ever possible to leave our galaxy, it would be a challenge in itself to survive upon arrival. Although humans are very impressive mammals, they are just far too dependent on their native climate to endure a drastic change.

It can only be hoped that some day the worlds deep dark secrets can be understood to a greater degree than they are today. The theories that are proposed today on things like black holes are merely ?guesstimations?. Because there is no way to truly observe them, it has been almost impossible to learn more about them. The nature of the human race however will not allow something such as a Black Hole to be seen and not understood, and it is only a matter of time before the initiative is taken to further understand them. A technology will be developed for the soul cause of further understanding. One does have doubts though if it is still unknown exactly how this world came to be at this point. Perhaps man just wasn?t meant to understand all the worlds mysteries.

It's still rather short (800 words) but that's ok!
This has been hard enough.. Rip it up please!

I wouldn't be supprised, Mister T!

His article was very philosophical and really interesting.. he talked about our senses and the world, and the boiled frog syndrome effect.
He certainly was very open minded, I wouldn't be at all supprised :)

Quite good for grade 12.

A couple of things:

1) In a formal essay, don't use contractions. (wasn't, don't, it's, etc.)
2) Third paragraph, first line. Replace discovers with discoveries.
3) When using slang terms (ie. guesstimations) put them in quotes.
4) The only other thing I can say is to lengthen some of the sentences in the fourth paragraph. They seem grammatically correct, but have a very abrupt feeling to them.

Well done!

It's been a while since I've done any English proofreading. I only fixed grammar stuff, and left ideas in place. I might have switched things around to make them flow better, but YOUR ideas are still there. :) The bold is only a recommendation.

Good rule of thumb is to read your work out loud. If it doesn't flow make some changes. And be concise! Biggest mistakes people make is to throw words in willy-nilly to make a paper longer. If you use five pages to say soemthing that could have been said eloquently in two, it's not gonna help your grade. Unless stupid teachers give you a set number of pages (biggest pet peeve I have with teachers; look at the MATERIAL, not how friggin long it is!).

Anyway, good luck.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is very likely that the human race will never fully understand the universe. Man just wasn?t meant to know all of the enigmas that are presented in the world. According to Carl Sagan, a world-renowned astronomer and author, ?Our perceptions may be distorted by training and prejudice or merely because of the limitations of our sense organs, which, of course perceive directly but a small fraction of the phenomena of the world.? (Sagan) Some tend to think our technologies will advance and unravel all of the world?s mysteries by 2021! (Say something regarding the fact that people in the past have also thought that they ?understood everything?) However, it is very easy for ones philosophies to be altered quickly when faced with new evidence and ideas. In the current state of evolution, the human mind, through physical or mental limitations, cannot understand all, or even most, of the world?s mysteries and happenings. Man is a curious animal and that curiosity, coupled with man?s desire to ?understand?, pushes him forward towards knowledge. Some things are meant to be understood, and some things clearly are not.
If, at this point in time, man still cannot decipher why the atoms of a grain of salt hold themselves together like they do, then it is highly doubtful that the human race will understand wormholes in the near future. Where does one begin if they have no idea how to identify what they are trying to figure out? ?Our sense organs, which, of course perceive directly but a small fraction of the phenomena of the world.? (Sagan) How much is happening around the world that can?t be seen or heard or felt by individuals? People lack the natural ability and senses to detect everything going on around them. If this is any example, it goes to show that the human body wasn?t meant to detect and understand everything around it, as it just was not made to sense and be aware of the finer details happening around it.
That?s not to say that man has not made amazing discoveries. Being able to map a piece of the Universe is certainly worth mentioning, but what about being able to travel in it? It is the inner curiosity innate to human beings that drive them to learn and understand more about their surroundings. It is too early to tell whether or not people will be able to explore the galaxies of the universe like the early settlers explored the great seas. Traveling into an unexplored universe is a much task scale than setting out to sea. However, technology has advanced to such a degree that journeys such as these seem entirely possible in the future.
It will be a long time before we are able to leave this galaxy and explore the universe as the seas were explored in the past. Humans were created with a small planet in mind, and man?s body was not meant to live in any other atmosphere. The nature of the human race, however, will not allow something such as a Black Hole to be seen and not understood. It is only a matter of time before the initiative is taken to further understand them. Technologies will be developed for the sole cause of greater knowledge. When even the origins of our very planet are a mystery, one must wonder if there are some things that should not be known.
Try integrating Sagan's quote into a sentence, don't just end the quote as the whole sentence. Also, I'd try rewording your thesis statement to make it less decisive. (it's only high school after all ;))
