English as not a first language

I'm asking any of the Chinese/Indian/French/Spanish/etc. on this board, whom know English as their second language -

Do you like English, do you like typing it? Do you like speaking it?

Although it must take more effort to understand it or speak it, do you actually prefer English over your native language?

I like English. I don't prefer it over Hungarian, but I live in Hungary, so that's understandable.
I tend to watch movies in English, understanding them is not a challenge. A lot of people I know have difficulties comprehending foreign speech, students generally have a lot of problems with listening exams.
The grammar is a lot easier than that of my own language.

Yes, I like typing it. Speaking it is not a problem, the years I've spent learning German have left their mark, though.

I prefer English over Dutch, but that's cause I never liked 99% of this country in the first place. It's too flat, people think it actually has some importance in the world, soccer is popular, people whine when someone finally starts cleaning up right-wing politicians... etc.

I hope English is not your first language...

In the early 1900's an enterprising fellow penned a little tome to assist his fellow immigrants (Italian) in appreciating their newly adopted language. The title? "English as She is Spoke."

😀

No, gibberish is. 😕

I'm American, and English is my primary language. I'm a second generation american, my grandparents on both sides spoke no english, only french, and both parents speak fluent french. As a result, because of communication with relatives and the general cultural influence, I understand the french language pretty well, at least for having it as a second language.

I could type french or speak it one on one very well, but get me in a group, or watching a french film, or a french sitcom and I get lost very, very fast. It's just so confusing when it isn't exactly what you are accustomed to. I can only imagine what it must be like for first generation americans.

I can easily understand mostly anything written in english, and I can write with little difficulties. Speaking or listening english is another (harder) matter 🙁
And no, I don't prefer english over romanian language

Calin

Both English and Japanese are my first languages😛

Typing in English is faster though because typing in Japanese is just a major pain.

I think that is one of the most amazing advantages of the Internet. I talk to people everyday whom I would otherwise not understand in person - and vice versa. And most of the time, I would not even know if they didn't point it out. There are no accents in cyberspace...

When you type in english, do you pronounce it in english in your mind, or do you still think it in japanese? 😛

I prefer to speak in Vietnamese because it have more feeling in the language (tone-nal language) compare to English. I also prefer to write in Vietnamese, because it is faster & is more poetic. However, I prefer to type in English because it is much easier to type.

I think in Vietnamese when speaking Vietnamese, and think in English when speaking English.

Poetic how? The way it sounds, or the meaning of the sentences?

Yes, yes, yes and yes (I communicate better in English, though my native language is a source of pride for me considering it is arguably the oldest continuously surviving language).

It brings me to tears to see the English language being butchered here in ATOT. Some fine examples:

definately
could/would of

When I see people use the above terms, I am inclined to think of them as less intelligent or poorly educated - especially when I find that English is their first language.

English is my third language, i am German.

I really don't mind English, it's just another language, one that i started to learn at the age of 9. These days i speak and type in English so frequently that i sometimes know the word in English but have a hard time finding the German word for it. 😀

Here in the U.S., sex education and sports have become a more important focus within the education system and political system, than reading/writing/math.

Isn't that what makes English so great? As bastardized of a language it is, we have no boundaries - every day new words are created or borrowed. English is the true melting pot of languages. Although I bet the QWERTY keyboard is also a main factor...

I came across this forum once that was Arabian, but most members typed in english. One lady typed out this long recipe in Arabic - and at the end she says in English "I hope you like that, it was a lot of work to type out!" and every responded to it in English even thoug htey were all Arabian. 😛 I remember seeing a show that was talking about computers in China, and the problem of adapting Chinenese character sets to the simple use of the computer. Not only are there some 10,000+ characters, but there are thousands of different dialects.

I like English so much that i don't remember how to speak Chinese ;-)

once i hit kindergarten.. Chinese went out the window

In English. When I type in Japanese, in Japanese.

I have dreams in both, its kinda funny when my gf asks me something when I'm asleep and she can't predict which language she'll get a response in.

Here are my takes:

Good things about English: universal, you can use it anywhere in the world, no gender specific <male or female as in other languages>

Bad things about English: the verb and the tenses, grammar rules

I understand you, I sometime have a hard time trying to find the translation for mouse, device driver, and some other terms 😛
