Engineers: Strain gauge question

I'm looking for a strain gauge that measures linear force around a cylinder. That is, there is a cable wrapped around a cylinder (like a ship mooring line) and I want to be able to measure force at a number of points about the circumference of the cylinder. I need strain gauges that can be mounted between the cable and the cylinder. All the strain gauges I can find are thin, flexible strips that seem to be used to measure flexure and such, but none of them seem to be oriented in the correct orientation for my application. The ideal solution would be a thin, ribbon like device that has several sensors embedded. I could then just wrap this ribbon around the cylinder and mount the cable on top. Any ideas?

Never tried to do what you're doing but I usually buy strain gauges from Vishay Micro-Measurements. They make just about every type of strain gauge you can buy.
