Engine oil "W" number?

So I asked my dad if I could use some of his engine oil and he asked me what the W number for my car is - what the hell is a W number? I have a hyundai elantra (2002) and scoured the user guide for such a number and can't find one.. What is he talking about? Thanks!

check the owners manual, should tell you what type of oil you should be using.

i like using 10w30 in my car. (recommended also)

My AP Chem book said the W stood for "winter." I've always doubted that though. If you get your oil changed at a dealership or quickie joint, they usually put a sticker in the windshield telling you when to get it changed. Most of the time they'll tell you what kind of oil they use. Just tell your dad what the sticker says (if applicable.)

It's not weight, it's winter.

10 weight 30?

😛

And it doesen't really matter. Whether you use 0WXX, 5WXX, 10WXX or probably even 15WXX... unless you live in a cold climate, they're all suitable.
