Hey guys, wondering if someone here can help with a little bit of information...

Car -> 2001 Honda Accord V6, Automatic. In dash 6-cd player(factory), and unit installed just an 'add-on' with fm-transmitter.

Summary:
Yesterday:
1. Took car into best buy to have sirius satellite radio installed. Decent $99 player, about $130 for install.

2. Came back 6 hours later(was told it would be 2-3 hours at first, but patience), paid for it. Took a look and said "Ok". Drove off and 2 minutes later, all the lights on my dash start going off. (TCS, ABS, Battery, Trunk, Door warnings). My lights are dim(dash and headlights).

3. Took it back and got into an argument. They took a good hour looking at it and said they couldn't find the problem anywhere. Quote: "Well I'm no mechanic so I can't tell you what the problem is. You have to understand that 'cars do break'. Take it to a dealership and have them prove it was us."

Had manager sign paper saying that we did come back with a problem, and still left with one.

On the way home I went to pass someone in a lane, not hammering the engine or anything and it kind of rev'ed really high. Wasn't sure whether the vtec was screwed up because of the power problems or what. Felt lilke I lost 1st and 2nd gear. It drove reallly funny after that. Decided same night to take it over to honda dealership for drop off.

Today:
Got a call and they managed to take a look at it this morning. They said they will need to replace the alternator. So not too big of a deal. I am hoping they find a short as a cause or something. And they will be checking out the other transmission issue as well. Hopefully I'll have a call back here in a couple of hours.

Basically any sure way to get this paid for or prove that Best Buy was at fault? Car has been more than well taken care of, no problems ever like this before, just had it in to Honda 2-3 months ago for all the check-ups etc. Even guy at the dealership was wondering why I was back and was upset that it got f*cked up. Any help/information appreciated as to what I can do legally and what I can do to prove the fault is on them. If I have to pay for the alternator, I think I can suck that up, but if it goes down to the tranny as well and is related to it, I'd like full proof.

Someone at my office recently told me about her son getting stereo equipment installed in his car only to find that BB had drilled into his gas tank.

To the OP: Good luck.

To everyone else: DON'T GET ANYTHING INSTALLED BY BEST BUY. THEY SUCK.

Wow that's some quality work. This is EXACTLY why I let NO ONE touch my car. Hope you get it fixed, you're probably gonna have fun getting BB to do anything for you though.

How much did the repairs cost?

I'd try to take it up with BB first before going the legal route.

ask Honda to write a statement as to the cause of the problem if they can determine it. present that to Best Buy.

I will avoid Best Buy in the future because I had my new stereo stolen a week after they installed it for me, and after filing the police report, it was suggested that it was probably related as they had had several reports of similar thefts right after installation. My belief is that the installers were taking your personal information and either selling it to thieves or stealing them themselves.

CC screwed up my Navigation when they installed a sat radio last summer. After it was installed, I couldn't get a signal from any sat's and the cables were all in securely. I ended up ripping it all out and doing it myself, worked like a charm and everything went back to normal.

Sounds like they blew the welds on your intake manifold. :p

Seriously, all signs point to them doing a serious hosejob on your electrical system trying to tap power for the radio.

I wish I had taken it back and said that.

"well there seems to be a problem. Looks like you blew the welds on my intake manifold."

Well I will be taking it up with BB first before taking any legal action(if any at all).

This is the 2nd time I've gotten screwed by best buy. I will take all advice and never do anything there again. I guess my stereo junkie friends are right. take a saturday and DIY.

good luck, hopefully best buy ponies up if it was their fault.

Also, DIY is much more fun and you know exactly how your car is setup then :)

Hey, thanks.

Well my last car(2000 toyota corolla...which eventually died on me), I did a lot of DIY work on it. But when I got the accord it was kind pretty much in perfect edition. and everything being kind of factory I guess I was just paranoid so always paid to have something done. that way, any problems, no hassle to get it fixed. except in this case. It just took a little bit more work than I thought so I went ahead and paid for installation.

That's what you get for putting a Sirius in your car. If it were an XM, you'd have no problems.

RIAA knew that you have "illegally" acquired music, therefore sending a self destruct signal down from their satellite, terminating all electrical equipment inside your car.

Just be glad you didn't have it installed in your house :Q

best buy has high school kids or high school drop outs installing their stuff. when i got my sat radio there was no way i was taking it there. so i went to car toys and the guy who did it knew his job very very well. the car in front me was a brand new porsche still with paper plates. thats trust in my book.

haha yeah it is. well the two guys doing it looked like they knew what they were doing. i just hate to know that someone installing car stereos as a 'profession' or rather wouldn't know what to do in an incident such as this. I understand he isn't a mechanic, but...it's like, do you know anything then?

my bad indeed.

Well, Honda says everything is fixed and works fine now. Alternator was replaced. It shorted out "somehow". No way to say it was because of the radio installation. Could have been from old age, blah blah blah.

$472 total.

$120 Radio + warranty
$110 Installation.

$702 weekend.

I could step on someone right now.

Hey now, some of us fresh out of highschool/highschool kids know how to work on cars. Just not a lot of us do.

Sticking an XM receiver in the car would've led to the RIAA pounding down his door and suing him. :D

<-- XM owner.

..if they were doing work with the battery connected they may have induced problems. I'm shure the dealer has/can reset the cpu in the engine control module or download OBD and read the fault codes.

Wondering if they grabbed the positive off some wire on the harness and didn't fully insulate it. It could just be coincidence though.
