Here's a picture of my truck's engine right now:

large image, 500k!
(sorry, I'm at work so I can't resize it!)

I have some degreaser, but would it be just as easy to take it to the automated car-wash and use the "engine cleaning" setting?

This degreaser requires the engine to be cool, how the heck do I get it to a place where I can clean it off without damaging the ecosystem? I can't just wash it off onto the driveway! Go to the carwash and spray it then clean it? put down a tarp?

Pick up a product called Brakleen Break Cleaner. That's what I used to clean off my block when I rebuilt my truck.

if you live less than a mile from the car wash, spray the stuff on,drive to car wash hose off
if more do it at home,
"orange cleaner" is what we are using at my work, that is lots easier on the environment, and it works quite well!!

that's what I'm going to do, it's about a mile. if it catches fire on the way there, I'm going to blame you! ;)

That picture is disgusting! :|

If you don't clean it, it's going to catch on fire soon anyway.

do it at the carwash. you can find one of those DIY carwash places and just do the engine bay there. depending on where you live, you aren't supposed to let that stuff go into the sewer. if you live in a coastal community, it's greatly frowned upon. you can do a good job with the DIY place and know that you aren't letting that stuff into the ground and sewer.
