Toying around with ideas and overhearing that she wouldn't think it would be all that bad, I came to a decision on changing the traditional diamond to getting a sapphire for the center stone of the engagement ring. Let me know your thoughts.
 
Have you ever seen a 4 carat stone? While most women like to show off a huge rock few would be comfortable lugging around something like that every day.
 
4ct is too big and gaudy. And looking at how you are wording it, maybe you should really reconsider this purchase. You "toyed around with the idea and it doesn't seem like it'd be that bad?" WTF? In other words, she wants the 1ct diamond and you can't/won't get it so you start hinting (because you are afraid of her) at getting something cheaper? Jesus.
 
agree w/ the others.. 4ct is a bit too much, in fact, dare i say, almost ugly at that size....
