Engagement rings and diamonds online, where to buy?

I've been looking around online for loose diamonds and engagement rings. Anyone recommend any specific sites? I've been looking at Blue Nile and did some googleing but am leery about placing an order someplace without having been referred to it.

Also, does anyone know a good place to look for a platinum engagement ring and band that's sort of antique looking, maybe with filigree?

That's odd, Bluenile.com used to have a really cool diamond search feature that let you move sliders to narrow down your search... Am I missing something or has this been replaced with a more generic search feature?

I would recommend learning as much as you can about diamonds before you buy an engagement ring... read read read!! diamondtalk.com is a good place to start. Find out what is important to you in a diamond... and you'll save money. I would then find a local jeweler that you feel you can trust.. I wount NOT recommend a mall store (zales, etc). I ended up getting my engagement ring from NYC diamond district, but you can get killed (not literally) if you're not careful. Also, there are a ton of ring designer sites on the web. I would find a band you like, and show that to your jeweler. If he can't get it, he'll know where you can.

It's still there. Just look for interactive search. If it doesn't work, then you might need to download the java software from http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp.

Go to a local jeweler. I can't imagine buying a diamond I haven't yet seen. I'm all for saving money and convenience of buying online, but with something like that, I would much rather not. There is just way too much variation diamond to diamond, and your eyes will tell you which is the best diamond. The nice thing about a local place is that you can inspect it yourself, usually under the microscope, even. Also, you can take them in for free cleaning and adjustments whenever you want to.

goodoldgold.com -> read and learn
pricescope.com -> more read and learn, great community, EXCELLENT diamond search engine

screw bluenile - overpriced, but they ARE the easiest to deal with.

find a local jeweler/appraiser who will check things out when they arrive. i had my setting made locally and he mounted the diamond i bought online. ended up appraising for 40% more than i paid.

do your research and she'll be blown away.

oh yeah - search next time!!!
