Engagement ring - too tall?

I bought a .65ct square H&A stone from GoodOldGold.com in May (very highly recommended) and my girlfriend and I went to look at settings for it. She picked one out that was originally used for a pearl (she didn't want the typical engagement ring look) and I had it done. I picked it up on Friday and I'll be damned if this thing isn't gigantic. The diamond stands way out from the base of the ring and it looks disproportionately to the rest of the stones (the other 4 are aquamarine). I went back to the jeweler to see if they could use a smaller head, but he's telling me that the heads are all premade and they're sized for that particular diamond. That doesn't make much sense, as there seems to be a lot of wasted height in this head. A wider angle could be used on the head to give less height and still reach the corners of the stone. I'm planning to go to some other jewelers today to get their opinion, but I figured there might be a few on AT as well. 🙂

I had a ring like that, I hated it. Too tall, it will get snagged on a lot of things, been there done that. Personal preference of course.

We talked about it before it was set in that it was not supposed to be towering above the base of the ring, but this is. She doesn't like traditional solitaire settings because they're too gawdy.

Take a picture of it on a finger and not so far zoomed in so we can get a better idea of the actual size.

Should have gotten a big sapphire. Diamonds are drenched in blood, unless they're Canadian or Australian... although even then there's a good chance they're mined by DeBeers. Sapphires are more rare and will actually last forever, unlike a diamond which will disintegrate in a few million years.

And that ring looks ridiculous. It's like a crown or something.

Where did you take it to have it mounted and such? A chain store or a local jeweller? Find a family owned jewelry shop and get recommendations from friends. THat's where to go when you need custom stuff done. THey can make anything they want to from scratch.

i was looking at rings at costco and some chick comes by with this HUGE 3ct diamond right on a setting that stuck up over 1/2" from her finger. I asked her if that bothers her, and her reply was "not with a diamond this big"

hahaha..crazy chicks

If she picked out the mount then just give it to her, if she doesn't like it go from there. Your opinion means nothing.

She picked out the mount at a local jeweler where a friend of hers works. This didn't come from a chain. I took it to a few more jewelers and they confirmed the same thing that with this setting you have to use a head that tall to accomodate the diamond. We looked at more settings, but none would be perfect "out of the box" and that they would have to attach a slightly different head to them. At this point I have no idea whether she'd want something like that, so I'm just going to take her back to the store to have her look at the settings and see if she can make up her mind.

it does look too tall - i have a little ring and it still gets snags. this is going to bump into a lot of things - it's going to be quite the adjustment period.

I seconded that, mine is little and it can be a pain when I am working and it gets snags.
