I thought tablet makers learned not to require long-term data contracts after the original Galaxy Tab was a complete flop.

Guess not. It's almost as if Motorola wants to fail.

^ I love that headline! Sad, but true. I just hope Moto makes enough of them so that when they have the eventual $199 firesale, there are enough of them that I can get one.

That would be an interesting business plan: put out your tablet at a crappy inflated price to start with even though you've actually planned to sell at the firesale price to begin with. You'll net a few suckers at the original bullshit price and make a little extra money, but when you then switch to the firesale price (IE: the intended price) you'll sell out within a matter of hours. Whereas if you had started with the firesale price, everyone would go "Meh. It must be junk."

No one ever said that. Or implied it.

You just know some dumbass Moto executive is sitting there thinking he's a supergenius because technically, the XYBOARD is $100 less than the corresponding 3G iPads. Forget that the 3G iPad doesn't require a contract and lets you turn 3G service on and off at will (well, one month at a time).

The only hope is the WiFi version will be more reasonably priced. Technically, the Xyboard and Xoom 2 are different products - the Xyboard has Droid branding and is on Verizon for the aforementioned ridiculous prices, while the Xoom 2 is the WiFi version whose US price hasn't been announced yet.

For reference, most smartphones cost 600 dollars. You dont notice it cuz of the subsidy from service.

Of couse, a netbook costs 279 and is superior in many ways. You can get one of those 3g dongles dirt cheap and play slightly less for service too since theres no voice.
