I have a Enermax Whisper 350watt, temp-controlled PSU in my computer but theres a couple things I read about but don't understand.

1) Does the MB really control the 80mm fan?
I have it plugged into the power supply fan header and I don't think it has any effect on the fan speed nor does MBProbe show the fan speed.

2) Can the 80mm fan be replaced with a quieter one? If so, with what fan?
Please answer only if you have the same model. I hear that some fans refuse to start when when wired in.

Thanks in advance.

If you have any questions regarding the PSU, feel free to ask.

There are three types of enermax whipser supplies. One measure the temp inside the supply and controlls the fans accordingly and has a RPM monitor for your motherboard
Another has a lead with a thermal diode on the end that you can put anywhere in your case
The third has an actual knob on the back to control the fan speed.
My, and my friend's enermax whisper are QUIET. that and the intel stock cooler are all that's needed. No case fans necessary. You will find that exceedingly quiet.

Thats what I got. However the 80mm fan in the back is quiet but not as quiet as a panaflo. Hard Drive aside, its the last component I'm able to hear across my room.

Edit: Oh, and I put the thermal diode in the coolest spot possible.
Motherboard: 29.4C, CPU 35.8C, Aux1:21.3C I usually have my CPU at 32C but I'm home where the ambient temp is higher.

I thought that too but it's too short to reach outside the case unless I drill the top of the case (with paintjob :( )

I have the same "whisper," and found it to be much too loud. I modded it by removing the 92mm fan and replacing the 80mm with a Panaflo L1A. I had no increase in case temps and it is much quieter. I just ran the tail out through the grommet where the other wires go and attached it, with an adapter, to one of the Molex cables, i.e., at 12 volts, so there's no issue about it not starting up. BTW I put a 92m aluminum mesh air filter over the opening where the internal fan had been.

Excellent. Thank you very very much.

Was the 92mm fan really that noticible? From what I can tell, it seems that the 80mm is the real culprit. And if it is that bad, are there any methods that I can take to slow it (the 92mm) down?
