i just completed a new build:

motherboard: ASUS Maximus XI Code (BIOS updated to 1302)
processor: Intel Core i9-9900K
memory: 64gb (4x16) Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 3200 MHz DDR4 DRAM
SSD: XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB NVMe Gen3x4 M.2
video card: ASUS ROG-STRIX-RX580-O8G

haven't been able to boot OS, although system POSTs fine.

exhausted everything i can think of short of changing slot of video card.

then this morning started wondering that perhaps PSU requirements have evolved since my last build.

currently thinking must somehow be mobo so replacement on way but i dread thought of tearing down and rebuilding.

thoughts?

That's such an old PSU. It might be OK still, but you'd have to test with a PSU tester or multimeter.

Why pay over $800+ for a motherboard and CPU, and not buy a new decent PSU (that is current with the ATX spec)?

admittedly i hadn't given the psu much thought bc when i purchased the existing one years ago it was state of the art and received rave reviews. it has been working 24/7/365 for quite literally years but nowhere near at 1000W.

that being said, could it be the cause of my issue? if it is, then i'm looking at more creep in my build and looking to spend another $300 ... recommendations welcome as i've been away from building my own rig for some time now.

I'm not sure what your issue is for sure.

You only say your system powers on, but you can't boot into your OS.

Did you do a clean OS install? Have you tried removing your GPU and use your integrated Intel graphics? Have you tried with only one or two sticks of RAM installed?

We would need a lot more info in order to provide any kind of educated guess.

i cannot install os at all; can't get that far. win 10 logo screen appears, animated dots start spinning and then within 10-20 sec computer shuts down and powers back up.

yes, i've done every troubleshooting step i can think of before suspecting mobo, except 1) moving the video card to a separate slot (can't imagine would help bc i already removed and used onboard graphics); and 2) the psu

I would try a different PSU.

You don't need anywhere near a 1000w unit. A quality 650w would be plenty. Corsair RMx (or TXm), Seasonic Focus Plus, EVGA G3, etc.

Just make sure that the unit comes with CPU 8 -pin (2 x 4 pin), and an additional 4-pin EPS cable.
With some models you have to go up to a 750w and up unit to get enough EPS cables.

thank you!

PSU seems to have been the issue. apparently i should've considered upgrading it as well. it is ok with powering graphics card but once i add one or more HDDs, the load when it tries to start the installation process must cause something to be out of spec and system powers down and reboots.

disconnected HDDs entirely (previously i had left the power cables attached so they were spinning up) and then everything worked perfectly without any special steps.

new PSU should arrive today but at least i'm up and running for now.

thanks for the useful info!
